squealing noise from car???

I have a 1998 mitsubishi carisma 1.6 glxi. There is an intermittent squealing sound coming from the back of the car. The noise seems to be coming from the rear of the car from rear wheel/axle area but under braking the noise stops. THe noise also noise also seems to stop/go away at higher speeds its more (moticable) at lower speeds. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Sounds like a brake issue, when driving along at slow speeds, pull lightly on the handbrake to see if the noise goes away, if so, it's your rear brakes at fault.

time for new drum brakes? are drums brakes easy to replace?

Yeah not bad, get yourself a haynes manual, always handy for other things on your car, the bay might be cheaper for picking up one.

what do drum break system consist of, what parts do i need to buy/replace and roughly how much for these parts, does anyone know?

I'm sure you can find some workshop manual's on said auction site, think the car is the same as the S40 Volvo? Maybe that helps..

No idea on price, but if the shoes have worn down it shouldn't cost a great deal.

Okay... what other parts may need replacing and how would i know? (sorry for the silly questions but i'm not too knowledgable on cars)

If you don't know a lot about cars, maybe you can get a friend to look at it, or take it to a garage, it's fun to work on your own car but without the right tools and know how it might not turn out right....

Get hold of maunal or guide first, read it then decide from there

i try my best, i managed to change the clutch slave cyclinder on my car albeit it was one that wasn't inside the gearbox type. And do a service on the car; change oil filter, oil, air filter & spark plugs.

right changed the rear brake shoes and cleaned the drum, but the squaking/squealing noise is still there

Any other suggestions?

could it be a wheel bearing?

taking it to a garage today after work, hopefully they'll find whats causing it
