I just this evening got the chance to install system shock 2, after buying a second hand copy from a car boot, and all i can say is WOW.

i havent played much yet but from what ive played this game is amazing. it reminds me a lot of deus ex, but a lot darker and sinister and ive literally only started!. ive just done some of the training missions and been thrown aboard this ship that is literally falling apart! i cant wait to play more of this. does it get better? and spookier? the only reason i bought this was because i've seen a lot of people praise this game on here.

thanks for the replies guys. im gonna add the texture pack when i get in later and try and convince the girlfriend to do a puzzle or something while i get on with the game. i wont add the new model pack on though, ill play this through first. couple of questions..

you say you have to use the wrench a lot, is that due to there being a lack of ammo in the game? ive started on medium.

also, i know it sounds a bit graphic whore-ish, but can i change the res to 1280x1024? its not essential, it just bugs me that my screen flickers and changes res everytime i go to the menu to save etc.

oh, and for anyone with vista, this works great in it. just set compatibility to XP SP2

i'll check those forums out too when i get home. work computers are quite restrictive

wow the upgraded the textures look good from the previews on the slot machine and muzzle flash, cheers for the links guys. and wish me luck. i never finished doom3 as everything just made me jump all the time, so i thought sod this and havent played it since. i guess i am a wuss when it comes to things making me almost hve a heart attack

oh, whats the expected play time on this anyone know?

I'm playing that game through again on serious difficulty, going for the maximum possible score


System shock 2 is one of my all-time faveourite games (along with Deus Ex). Here's hoping that bioshock can be a worthy successor!

edit - expected play-time is around 8 to 9 hours if I remember correctly. A lot depends how much time you spend wandering around though...

no nook or cranny will go un explored, so im looking for a good few hours of fun. thanks guys

You have to edit a file in notepad to change the resolution manually. I can't remember how or which file now, but it really is quite simple. I am at work but if you haven't figured it out by the time I get home, I will look at my version which is still on my HDD. I use 1600x1200...

As for the wrench comment, you will always find it handy, so don't ditch it. Although if you do, there are several more scattered about. Ammo should be used conservatively but don’t worry… you’ll soon learn when to use the wrench or a well-placed bullet / laser burst!

ah, yeh ive done that for a few old games ive had (edit the cfg file). or was it BF2... oh well heh.

i found two wrenches last night while i was playing hoping to dual wield them ill keep one and bin the other. you know the menu where you keep your items, does it ever increase to carry more?

im itching to play but i just know my gf will want me to go to hers tonight, great.. damn i cant wait to move into my house. its ages off finishing it though..

IIRC you need to increase your strength stats to carry more items. It will say in the manual anyway...

no manual. it was a disk in a sleeve unfortunately. thats why i paid 3 quid for it lol. oh well. thanks for sharing though, gona have a quick bash now before tea

Demo doesn't work for me in XP either. The full version does once patched, sometimes you need to set the compatibility mode in XP for that application too.

yeh i did and it works for me and im on 64bit vista

anyhoo, bit of an update, im up to the deck after locating that guy for his keycard, he dies and two shotgun hybrids come through the door. i havent got any further than that yet. havent had chance. although i do have an excellent condition shotgun with loads of pellets (explosive and normal) and i cant use it because im not strength of 3 yet bah lol. any tips on what to upgrade and what not to upgrade? im hacker level 2 and thats about it.

Hey tauren, i see you managed to get this working on vista x64, could you please tell me how? had this game sat in the drawer for years and decided to install it recently, it installs fine but whenever i try to play it i just get a system shock 2 has stopped working window

hi, basically i patched it. then run it with the settings for windows xp or windows 2000, they both work for me, change the SShock2.exe to run with either the xp settings or win2000. it should work, if not then im not sure why.

Yeah - this is a good. point. It also helps if the room you choose is close to the central elevator. Also, try to remember the locations of all the chemical rooms. Certain chemicals which are required for research can only be found in a single room.

what is the point of researching? ive got a few items that need researching. but i dunno what to do with them. assuming i need the skill.

You need research skill, then you will be able to research the item. Some of the research items are useful, for example they will allow you to do more damage to a particular enemy, or in one case allow you to take health-giving items from the corpses of certain enemies. IIRC you can also research some of the weapons you find lying around.

i havent had any crashing yet but i have had all the textures go a purplish colour, i have to restart the whole game then. e.g exit and reload it.

Thats strange OP I've just installed the game myself this weekend. I played it years back at uni, but seeing the lack of quality games about now I decided to play playing it again a second time (got stuck 1st time) and I truely think this is one of the best games of all time. Its defo in my top 5, possibly top 3, or maybe top 2, it just oozes class.

How much did you pay for it by the way?

3 quid out of the back of someones car. im a bit stuck in the engineering deck. i always seem to get killed or on such low health that one shotgun hybrid can own me.
