Is this part of DX9 10 or 11?
I've been playing Amnesia: The Dark Descent and got everything on max.

Running on GTX 460 oc to 850mhz, 2gb ram.
I put SSAO on high resolution and maxed it at 128 samples.
However, this gave me <10 fps! Even in the menu, I had to reduce it to 16 samples to get a playable fps.

Is the 128 samples just overkill? Why is it causing such low fps?

SSAO destroys fps im afraid its very intenstive on the GPU and even the highest video cards struggle.

Turn it off

Ambient Occlusion isn't tied to any specific DX version, but it generally performs better under DX10 and even more so under DX11.

The methods used to compute the ambience aren't disimiliar to ray tracing so its gonna hit performance hard.

Ok, i turned off two types of annoying blur, radial and some other 1. And it upped my fps from 20 to 60 :P So now i can put SSAO on 64 samples, and it runs 30-40 fps.
