SSD and HDD config

Hi all,

I am upgrading my PC and have a couple of questions concerning the disk drive configuration.

I have 1 new 256gb ssd, a new 500gb HDD and an old 500gb HDD which has o/s, games and documents on it. Would it be best to set the drives as follows?

1. Ssd - software (OS, antivirus, office etc.)
2. New HDD - games (steam, origin installs plus games)
3. Old HDD - photos, documents etc.

I have read about having steam installed on an ssd and the games directory on the HDD - is this worthwhile?

The old HDD won't be installed initially as I need another data cable, how would I go about formatting it and will having the old OS installed on it cause any problems?
 
That setup will be fine. You just choose the drive boot order in the BIOS so you'll set your new SSD first. The old Windows install on it won't cause any problems. To format it you'll be able to just right-click its drive letter from within Windows and choose 'Format' - once you're booted into the new install off the SSD that is.

As for Steam, there's no point having just the Steam client installed on the SSD and all the games on the HD but when you install Steam games you can choose which drive to install them on. You can put your frequently played games on the SSD if you have space and all the others on the HD for example.
 
Can i jump in and ask about the steam thing.
Currently i have os/apps installed on a ssd, and steam installed onto a separate D: drive.
When i DL a game it asks where i want to put it, if i put it onto C: drive that won't cause an issue seeing as Steam is installed on D: drive?
Always wondered about this.
Sorry for hijacking, but OP may find this useful too. :)
 
Yep that's absolutely fine to do. I have Steam installed on an SSD and the games I play most are on there but for other games I have them installed on a folder on an HD that I've just called "Steam Games" - inside there there's just a steamapps folder with the games in and Steam knows what is installed where.
