currently running a mid-2010 13" macbook pro. i make extensive use of virtual machines as i do a lot of development work, and the 13" screen when i'm on the go is a bit of a hindrance. i'm considering upgrading to the new mid-2012 15" with retina display that has just been released. do i need to be concerned about the use of virtual machines shortening the life of the ssd storage? i would be less concerned if it were standard form factor, but as it's a proprietary design connected in via a mini pci-x card any replacement of this is likely to be expensive. would this be covered by applecare if it were to fail during the term of the coverage? i know i could run the virtual machines via a usb/firewire/thunderbolt enabled caddy, but i spend a fair amount of time on public transport and this would just be a bit too clunky to be honest. thanks.

The SSD should have a life longer than the useful life of the machine. AppleCare should cover any drive failures as well.

Honestly, it is nothing to be worried about.

I've been using an early 2011 15" MBP with SSD and virtual machines for over a year. The SSD makes working with VM's a breeze. As stated above Apple will resolve any issues with the SSD if it fails within warranty.
