Back to mechanica 80GB Drive due to serious SSD Issues.

Over the span of 3 days I went from BSOD's to not even being able to boot up with out Fatal Error message with no text and unable to right click without system throwing hissy fit and the SSD Write Speed dropping to around 8mb/s to getting errors when trying to install windows onto the drive itself (Wouldnt even get past the part where it showed the partitions, wouldnt let me even delete or format).

Even started to get error in event viewer that said something about I/O error and too much data at once or something.

Whack the mobo back into IDE mode from AHCI and an 80GB Mechanical Drive and ive had system up, 60-80mb/s write speed.

It was a Samsung 830 SSD 3 Years, 6 Months old and I believe the overall write was about 13.59TB.

What software do they have to test the drive because according to HDSentinel and CDM the drive was healthy and whilst HDS reported 91% health CDM was reporting 100%.

Is it possible to install the software on a non samsung drive in order to perform a check on a Samsung drive ?

I have looked on Samsung site and cant see anything specific that suggests its for health checking just cloning / performance tuning and such.

Have you tried a different sata cable? Both of my 830 drives have thrown major errors due to cruddy SATA cables. Replace the cables and all was fine.

Samsung magician might show some issues. It can be installed without a samsung drive even in the system.

Can you grab a printscreen of your SMART Status?

Not atm, SSD has been unplugged since I ran into the issue of not even being able to delete or format the partitions during the initial stages of windows installation.

I currently have a working system using an old 80GB SATA Drive and since one of the SATA connectors is faulty on current PSU anyway and I am unsure which one as I failed to mark it I ordered and received a Corsair HX750i and I am awaiting some new SATA cables from OCUK.

They were shipped Friday via 1st class and I know it was too much to hope for but I was hoping they would come Sat but they didnt so I am going to leave it til they come.

Just incase it is the SSD I have in my possession a Samsung 850 Evo but I will attempt to see if I can sort the 830 out after I replace the Power Supply.

The big problem I have with these damn power supplies and really **** cases is there is NEVER enough room between the caddy and the side case for connecting 4 drives one under the other there is always a u-bend which means I have NEVER been able to push my hard drives all the way in the lock them.

I have had at least half a dozen cases and they have all be **** in this regard.

I have a replacement PSU and SSD Drive but after the holidays I am going to arrange some time to completely dismantle, clean and reassemble my computer and see if I can get the 830 up and running before just switching to the 850.

I ordered 3x https://www.overclockers.co.uk/akas...th-securing-latches-30cm-black-cb-076-ak.html

Would have ordered 5 to cover all my drives but they only had 3 in stock, stop slacking OC :D

I have a Sandisk Extreme 16GB already configured for USB Windows Install with all relevant Motherboard Drivers and SSD Tools as well as Samsung Magician you mentioned.

PS
With the current SATA Drive running in IDE Config in Bios I am using the cable that was attached to the SSD.

EDIT
If you have not used an SSD as a boot drive yet and you plan on getting one then FOR THE LOVE OF GOD MAKE SURE YOU CAN GET ANOTHER ONE QUICK.

Back on Mechanical Drive is pure torture after 3 years with an SSD lol, the noise, SOMEBODY STOP THE NOISE :D

Just got the bare essentials which is more than enough for now but 44GB out of 74GB free with just the essentials.

atm I am running off an 80GB Samsung HD082GJ which is kinda resting next to the case and the side panel is off my PC.

Edit 2
Thinking about it all this ****Storm happened when trying to and then updating to Kaspersky Internet Security 2016 it went all haywire and I just decided to reinstall windows, got it back on and put KIS back on then within 15 minutes I was getting those event viewer errors about IO flooding and then it all went **** up again then I just couldnt even do anything with it lol.

I dont like coincidences.

I will let you know how I get on.

Any reason for not using the 850 evo now? If the 830 decides to work again you can still put it to good use.

I hate having to do the cabling for storage drives, they require so little power it would be so easy for them to be powered off the motherboard with a single cable solution.

I kinda don't want to tell you this both those sata cables are the ones that causes me all the issues.

I can't stand HDD based systems any more. And they are bloody noisy with an OS installed. I had a friend with a fairly high end system (2600K + 290) who I couldn't convince to upgrade. So I sent him a spare one I had from a laptop. It's going to blow his mind once he installs it.

I haven't used any anti virus for many years and haven't ever had any problems.

That I did not want to hear, damnit.

All my SATA Cables are around 4-5 years old and are about 50cm long.

Most are black connector on both ends, red in the middle. The one that was connected to SSD is Black all over and the last time I tried to install windows to it after 2 hours it was only around 70%.

Do all SATA Cables support 6gb/s.

The reason I wanted to try the 830 again was to see if it was indeed the drive itself rather than the cable, I didnt want to slap in the 850 only to screw that one up and if the 830 is fine I could give it to my dad for his machine even though his system is old and only has SATA 2 ports it will be better than what he has now.

That and I was waiting for the cables but from what you have said about them I dont know what to do now, they cost me £12. What cables do you use ? I just wanted something flexible that didnt poke out too much when I connect it to the HDD.

I dont have a virus scanner atm and tbh ive not been infected for donkeys years the main thing I wanted is a Firewall.

At the moment I am trying Comodo for the first time ever but I have been encountering something strange, I have a very old system that I had been using to back up my drives and when access my PC from it its starts transferring but every now and then the connection just goes dead until I hit F5 to refresh the network folder then it starts ticking along again, I have never seen anything like it. If I leave it it takes anywhere from 10s to a minute to auto kick back in.

There are no messages in event viewer to indicate a problem and even the light on the back of the machine just sticks solid like there is no incoming traffic to it

Edit
Forgot to say, on the last working install I managed to do on the SSD where I was getting the IO Flood Errors the SSD Benchmark was reporting 6-8mb/s writes.

Thats right, not a typo, Six to Eight.

All sata cables support 6Gbits

An SSD on SATA II is still very fast. I ran mine in SATA II for a while for testing and then forgot about it.

The cables I use where from that popular auction site. They were advertised as Gigabyte brand cables and they feel very chunky.

Maybe these issues are motherboard related? Do you have another system or laptop that you can test in?

Not really but am going to set aside a day where I feel I can take the stress and try and sort it.

Probably a good idea. Do you have a laptop you can use?

Afraid not, can't justify the outlay since I have a PC.

Pretty broke at the moment after giving pretty much every penny I had to parents to clear the house because Barclays were being bullys.

Usually after I buy a system I start saving for another 4-5 years down the line so if anything happens in between those years I can afford a replacement or two but this has been pretty much been a year with no breaks and the last thing I needed was PC issues that just explode without warning.

Since it started and me trying to get things going and backing up storage drives to their counter parts I have in a safe I was stressing so much it was physically making me sick, didnt eat much for a few days.

I was just shocked that with the same cables (Power + SATA) it took in AHCI mode about 2-3 hours to install windows but switching to IDE and SATA drive took around 30 minutes.

Just needed a bit of a break before I try and get back to it.

Got the SATA Cables in the mail today, how flimsy are they ? Should I ask to send em back, really wish on the side of the case where you fit the cables for the HDD they would leave a 2-3 inch gap for the cables.
