Hi,

I have a Samsung 850 evo which will randomly disappear in windows, I have to restart windows for the drive to reappear.

Have done a full drive scan and SSDLife shows the drive as healthy
Sata cables have been replaced and different sata port tested.

Any ideas on what else to try and I have ran out of ideas

Cheers

Could it be a motherboard / bios problem ? I have a gigabyte MB and two SSD's every so often maybe once twice a year it just says 'insert boot media and restart' or something to that effect. I go into bios and disable the first drive in the list ( even though the second doesn't show ) and then it boots fine.

Never thought about mobo or BIOS, will check if there is any new updates ... All drivers are up to date but I guess these won't cause the issue?

The problem has only been happening this past few weeks, I get no error messages apart from VMWare saying the VM files are missing and shutting down (w7 vm)

When it isn't visible in Windows is the device there in Device manager and/or Disk Manager?
Andi.

Not sure about device manager mate but not visible in Disk Manager, have tried refreshing/rescanning the disk but only shows my other drives.

Having checked the Asus site it looks like I am on the latest BIOS.

Could it be a PSU issue?
Andi.

just checked in BIOS and it is showing the correct voltages (I know it's not 100% accurate)

I also have 1 other SSD & 2 Hard drives connected to the same Sata Power cable and they don't have any issues.

PC is also running ok, spends approx 4/5 hours per day video rendering.

I'd suggest just unplugging and re-connecting the power to the drive if you haven't done already.

Drive disconnected again last night and can confirm the SSD does not appear in device manager.

New Sata Power cable installed today, have removed the other Sata power splitters so all are on 1 Sata splitter so if there is an issue than all other drives will have the same problem ... I think? (all drives are already backed up)

It could be an issue with one of the power connectors on that drive or the sata power it was connected to,if the problem doesn't recur with a new power cable we'll know soon enough.

I had a evo 840 that kept randomly disappearing and I had changed the sata cable, sata port and done a full secure erase but nothing helped in the end it went back to the seller as under a year old and got a 850 in return as the 840 was no longer sold

Been a couple of days since replacing the Sata Power cable and all seems good.

Strange how the other drives never disappeared as they were on the same Sata Power.

either way cheers for the help guys.

Could have just been the connections needing re-newing,small piece of corrosion on one of the power tines causing the issue.

You can often fix this by pluging and unplugging a few times, or rubbing with the tip of a small screwdriver to scratch a bit of oxidisation off.
