SSD for MacBook Pro

My work MacBook Pro (non-retina) mid 2012 is so slow and its less than 6 months old

I want to keep the current disk for storage and add an SSD for the OS to speed things up. Im hoping I can just buy a disk and then clone it.

My main worry is keeping the existing data and not losing it. I want to clone the drive onto the SSD.

Im going to keep the existing disk and get rid of the optical drive so going to get one of these; 2nd Bay Hard Drive/SSD Drive Caddy SATA to SATA for Laptop/Macbook for 9.5mm Hard Drive

This guide is pretty good on how to replace the optical drive.

I installed my SSD today and I had to enable TRIM. The Mac booting time is still horrific. Once i log in i definitely notice a speed increase. Is Mac OS just generally this slow? I have added some test from Xbench. Do these look normal?

The boot process has decided to speed up, 12 secs to the login screen which is pretty quick

It started off booting slow but the speed has definitely increased and I haven't made any changes since installing the SDD other than rebooting it a few times to test. It boots faster than my PC now

I think its poor that such an expensive laptop doesn't come with an SSD already.

True, i think the option was there but my boss opted for space.

Get rid of the optical drive and put another drive in there. Who uses discs these days

I paid £12.99 for the internal caddy. I carry my Mac to and from work so its one less thing I wont forget.
