SSD for Windows and Apps

I'm about to re-install Windows for my main box and have been considering a SSD for Windows 7 and all the applications I use. Massive storage isn't really an issue as I already have two 1Tb drives (movies/TV shows/music etc) and a 300Gb Velociraptor (games). Budget wise I'd like to keep it under £150.

Oh and I'm running an Asus P5Q Deluxe with 4gb of RAM and a QX6700.

From what i read ssd's are the bizz. I'm saving up for a couple of ssd's.

Yeh, that's why I'm looking for a small one to be my boot drive. Just not sure what to get.

It's probably helpful if you can state the applications you do want to be on the SSD and the maximum size of SSD you want.

I would recommend the OCZ Vertex 2 60GB. I recently got one myself and It is awesome. (Maximum Read: 285MB/sec, Maximum Write: 275MB/sec, Sustained Write: 250MB/sec). This would be great to just run your OS on.

ssd is a great idea, but u need to see how many GB your apps take up and if u want to add your fave game.

The Vertex looks good. 60GB will be enough space too. Do I need to buy a mounting kit too or will the drive come with one?

Unless stated, you will have to get one. I don't think any come with them.

Ordered the Vertex and the Akasa mounting kit. Should come tomorrow and i'll re-install Windows this weekend. Joy... Thanks for your help everyone.

Afaik, Vertex drives come with a mounting kit. At least, that's what the OCZ website tells me.

It says in a comment it comes with one, although not in the main description on the site here. Phone them today and get it removed from the order.

Vertex 2 series SSD's comes with an adapter kit and a sticker. The old series Vertex does'nt.

So the drive came yesterday along with the extra (not needed now heh) mounting kit, however I've run into a problem. I've got a Lian Li A71B case and the hard drives are mounted a bit differently. Instead of screwing the hard drives straight into the cages you use these special extra long screws with rubber/silicon (not sure) bits. Here's a picture for clarity. Anyway the problem is that the screw holes on the OCZ and Akasa mounting kits are too small. That screw thread is a touch too wide. At the moment the only option I can see is to get a 5.25 inch mounting kit as drives that size are mounted normally at the top of the case. Anyone else got any ideas?

I had a similar issue with mine yesterday. HAF932 trays don't fit properly with the OCZ mounting bracket. All I did was use a screw and fix it to the side of the dvd bay.
As theres no moving parts it doesn't really matter where you put it

if you dont move your case around a lot self adhesive velcro, thats what I used.
Or if its on show you may wanna make a better job

I've had a quick look and if i screwed it in it'd only be with one screw on one side and it would be hanging a bit in the air. The Velcro idea isn't bad though, just need to find some.

I wouldn't worry too much. My SSDs are just kind of sitting in there. Unlike conventional/mechanical drives that isn't really a problem.

Yeh true, I guess old habits die hard! Anyway we have a winner with Velcro coins. I'll stick 'em to the mounting bracket.

You could perhaps try to get hold of the Intel SSD mounting kit that they provide with their drives, that fit in my Lian Li which uses the same mounting system. You could maybe pick one up on ebay.
