I have a dell inspiron XPS L501X laptop

Spec is

I7 Q740 (1.73ghz)
8GB Ram
Nvidia GT435M

is it worth sticking an OCZ SSD in for a performance boost?

As long as your OS supports trim (i.e. Win7 or Win8), I'd say go for it. I put one in my Vostro 1500 (4gb ram, win7 64) and it made a huge difference, booting/shutting down in under half the time, loading all apps much quicker and everything just felt more snappy (versus the 5400 rpm drive it had before). It didn't make as much difference in my XPS M1330, but that had Vista (32), only 2gb ram, a fairly slow CPU (C2D@2GHz), and is just much older tech than your XPS.

I would agree with fish99. I recently put a Samsung 830 in my dell 1640 laptop and it's made a significant difference to performance. I'd recommend the upgrade.

Put one in my girlfriends accer laptop for xmas she so happy with it she said it feels like a new laptop everything just runs a lot faster worth every penny :)
