Should there be any problem in running an SSD in a USB caddy? I've got my replacement Mac, but can't get the data on the Crucial M4 that came out of the kaput MBP. SSD was working fine in target disk mode...

I've tried three USB 2 ones - a noname one I have, the guts of a 2.5" Freecom and a 3.5" IcyBox with external power that were borrowed from my mate round the corner. It's not picking up in any of them and there's a slight whine from the SSD. The caddies work fine with an old 80GB SATA drive in them.

I'm slightly stumped, and figured I'd ask before blowing some cash on a USB3 one tomorrow. That said I've never tried an SSD in a caddy before...

I use my 60GB Intel 320 SSD with one of those cheapo SATA to USB cables you get off fleebay. This is on a 2009 MBP so in theory should work no problem.

I guess it's target disk mode time from ye olde Mac mini, I'd better go looking for the putty knife. Unfortunately the Apple Store were out of Thunderbolt to Firewire adapters so I'll have to source one of them first...

After a bit of head scratching ... problem solved. Firmware bug on the SSD related to power on hours. Just happened to coincide with me pulling it out of the old MBP...
