SSD not showing on 8.1 install

Hey all,

I've been wracking my brains all evening with this one.

I have an HP X360 (11-n083sa to be precise) of which the drive is failing.
I've removed it and placed in a sparkly Crucial SSD that was on This Week Only and have created an 8.1 USB install disk.
It boots to the set up screen but then when the disk selection screen pops up, it doesn't display any drive at all.

I've had a look online for SATA drivers in case they need loading, but apparently the N series SoC that the laptop uses doesn't require them. I've attempted to turn off Secure Boot and get again but nothing appears as before.
The drive does appear if I switch to Legacy mode rather than UEFI, but I'd like to install in UEFI mode anyway as it's as intended.

Anyone have any ideas? It's been a good 3 hours of head scratching here and I'm genuinely stumped.

in UEFI Mode does the SSD appear in the bios but then just not seen on the 8.1 install screen?

With the boot set to UEFI mode, there isn't an option for the hard drive as a boot option listed.

I've got the boot priority as OS bootloader, USB key, then network boot would be next but I've not got it switched on. From what I've read, it normally has to boot through the OS loader to detect any hard drives, but unless I've the USB 8.1 install stick plugged in it just pops to a black screen informing me that there is no boot device and to install an OS.

I've never had this much difficulty with installing an OS before ever!

After spending some more time today and doing a bit of hunting around, the BX100 is apparently not recognised in a large number of laptops running the InsydeH20 UEFI. Popped a 250GB Samsung in I borrowed for testing and there she was!

I have a problem with a Toshiba satellite pro r50 here.

Crucial m500, works fine in Windows 7 setup but 8.1 and 10 don't detect it.

Forced to change ssd. Think crucial are a bit rubbish at the moment with compatibility. I've contacted their tech support as there are comments all over the Internet about this, but they refuse to admit there is a problem.

I tried the SSD in my work laptop earlier with a clean Windows 10 install and had exactly the same issue. I'm a little surprised tbh!
