In a laptop with space for only a single drive would you go for a 256gb SSD or 750gb HDD?

It will be a second machine and I have plenty of storage elsewhere in desktop and NAS.

Seems a bit limiting in terms of not being able to just dump all my music etc. on there but now I have an SSD in my main machine it seems a shame not to have the nippiness and quick boot especially in a notebook.

Thinking may be a portable drive when I want to take more stuff with me.

personally i would go for a 1tb external usb3 drive, i bought an ssd for my laptop 128gb one for main o/s + my most used programs, i use the old main drive now as a secondary drive, But i also bought the seagate expansion 1tb drive for portability.
in your position with just one drive bay i would go with the 750gb drive if i was going to fill it with music etc.....256gb ssd will not take long to fill up.

the seagate drive cost me £75 from pcyouknowwhere :)

Can you definitely not remove the CD/DVD drive (if it has one) and get a 2nd caddy? Most laptops should allow you to do this.

thanks for that but the machine i am getting is slot loading XPS 15z

Still undecided but leaning towards SSD and some additional storage

I would personally grab the SSD. By doing this you get:
1) Better PC speed
2) More battery life
3) Improved life span
4) Less sound coming from it

Only downside is the space but all the positives should out weigh it, in my opinion at least :) You would still be able to store a lot of music and stuff on it too.

XPS 15z nice bit of kit there, well 256Gb or 240Gb plenty for a laptop with extra external storage, pick up a cheap USB 3.0 1TB and a caddy for your orig HDD and you are set :D
