SSD prices climbing fast!

I have a spare 4TB portable HDD that was used for my Xbox, since I no longer play on it, I have unplugged it and now doing nothing, that is my overflow until things settles down. Hopefully it will but I should have enough SSD to last me a while.
I must admit, I was very tempted to buy a 4tb PCIE 5.0 SSD in the recent sales (Crucial t710, SN8100 or Samsung 9100), but resisted. My PC is for gaming only and I have c1.7tb free, so that should be fine until AM6 and a full rebuild.... Not to mention, I didn't want to reinstall Windows on a new drive and start from scratch.

You don't need to reinstall Windows etc, just clone the current drive to the new and swap them over. It's very easy.

I've read about that before but never looked into it. Is it foolproof? Will look into it for next time.

Thank you for the nudge!

I've clones my main boot drive several times over the years.. inbetween full re-installs where i completely change the computer..

Foolproof, is a loaded word.. but it's all reasonably easy and relatively straightforward.. just ensure you choose the correct drives at the time of cloning.. and your golden..

Yes, I'd say is is. You just may need an external enclosure for the target SSD / Nvme.

I did one a few weeks ago using Acronis. It's about 5 clicks through a wizard on the machine you're cloning, swap the drives over, reboot.

If you have a Crucial drive on the system at all, then you can do it for free here https://www.acronis.com/en/promotion/crucialhd-download/

I've done it with AOEMI free version in the past.

That said if I'm moving to a brand new drive I tend to use it as an opportunity for a completely fresh install to clear out any accumulated deadwood

Last time I used macrium reflect, it didn't go so well, no idea why, worked fine in the past.

Cloned my then current drive to my new drive, macrium reflect showed everything that windows needed had been cloned, new drive was set as the boot device, was booting fine from that drive and all looking good. Soon as I formatted the source drive, windows stopped booting. No idea what went wrong. Just took the opportunity to do a fresh install, couldn't be bothered to troubleshoot.

Normally I just unplug the source drive to make sure all is good, but both were m2 drives, so it was just not practical and well macrium has never failed me before that.

Overall, perhaps more so as Crucial will be no more, I find that the form format, SSD, have been somewhat disappearing in availability and competitive pricing over that of the NVME type. Whilst that might not be a bad thing, I have enjoyed using 2.5" SSD's for storage, easy enough to both connect and disconnect from a system, unlike NVME's.
There will be reasons why this does not always apply, but I also noted very little practical differences between a SSD and NVME for gaming loading, maybe more of a reflection of how good SSD's are over that of a mechanical HD, when they became decent enough to use for games.

So the likelhood of these coming down any time soon? I thought they seemed like they had gone up loads, I am after a 4tb m.2

Agree, it's doubtful you'll get anything with more reasonable prices soon.

We not only have a general shortage, but with Crucial basically leaving the market due to Micron pulling out from giving them the parts to sell to consumers and them concentrating on AI/Server sales, we lost a major player of consumer SSDs. And like the GPU shortage a few years ago, those who can buy have stocked up and pushed prices up. Given there's no stock coming in, prices will be unable to come down whilst others keep the prices high by buying still at higher prices (on the consumer side).

So you're probably looking at the cheaper Chinese stuff or looking at least 2-3 years before prices start to even come back down (and it won't be back to these levels either, but a slow climb down).

Recomendation is if the storage isn't too important to go wtih cheaper Chinese products.

Honestly, I've got some Chinese drives in my unraid server and they're fine imo, might be luck of the draw but still.. My MX500's on the otherhand, maybe due to having more of them but I've had several of them fail without warning.

2x nvme 2TB Netac NV7000 (with heatsinks) and spec wise they're no different to my Seagate firecuda 530's, all the way down to the controller etc... honestly apart from an issue reading temps which is resolved with some updates to the bios/os they've been absolutely fine in a mirrored pool. Performance is where expected etc. Netac have been around for years and supposedly are oem for some brands too.

Also got some fikwot (got to love Chinese branding lol) m2 sata ssd's in a silverstone 3.5" adapter (only using as a cache drive) and again can't say I've noticed any major issues but sata based ssd's are so 'mature' in technology terms I'd be concerned if they didn't work lol.

Any experience with the fanxiang brand.?
They also seem to offer SSD drives.

I'm using some fanxiang SODIMM DDR4 RAM 64GB (2X32GB) 3200MHz CL22 in my mini forums um560xt (amd 5600h based). Not sure if it's just placebo effect from 16GB to 64GB but it honestly feels snappier with these than the ram it came with....
