SSD Recommendation

Hi everyone,

I currently have a setup where I have a raspberry pi 3 with a 2TB hard drive attached. I backup a number of devices using rsync over ssh which works well. I think it’s been running for about 8 years however the hard drive is starting to make a strange noise and it appears to be struggling. I’d like to replace it with a 2TB + SSD but I want something good value.

Can anyone recommend a drive?
Many thanks,

E

I don't know anything about the raspberry, is there anything specific that it requires?

I assume this is a SATA device, or does it use a USB caddy?

If you can say what you need then it is easier to make suggestions, e.g.
- Internal SATA SSD
- NVME/PCIE SSD
- External USB SSD

It has USB 2.0 ports. I’m currently using a 2.5inch USB external hard drive. As long as I can plug it into one of the USB 2 ports it will work. Even if I have to use a converter cable. I was exp3cting the prices to be low but they are anything but….

If it gets power through the ports, a converter isn't really viable, because the device would also need power. So, you'd need either a caddy that can be re-used for different drives, or an external drive that already comes in a caddy.

Yeah, unfortunately SSDs are being hit by the same shortage that RAM is.

I'd go with the cheapest SATA SSD from any reputable manufacturer that you can buy. You're never going to stretch the legs of any SSD with USB2.

You may need an external power supply if you use a SATA to USB adapter. A powered USB hub is one option.

Rather than usb2 wouldn't it be better to pick up an ssd 'hat' for the raspberry pi and then get a corresponding m2 ssd.... hats are fairly cheap by the looks of it.
