Just browsing through (window shopping)as you do came across these

Don't you just love progress,I remember reading about these not that long ago am impressed with the speed of just one with seek times of around 0.2-0.3ms and RAID supported too:p if you feel flush would be a nice little touch to finish this recent build and nearly affordable too:) then maybe upgrade to 8GB a ram turn off page file .. Finite :)

I've always found the hard drive as a major bottleneck in how fast you can use your pc, with long loading times etc.

When these are good enough to get a good 4 years from them, i'll consider buying. Though I guess it all depends on your budget, but these things aren't likely to go up in price!
 
I like everything about them
Lightning fast
low power= less heat
Silent
No moving parts to wear so should be reliable
Firmware upgradable for faster read/write times

Any drawbacks, Whats the trade off is there any??
 
cool happy to see the 250g out but got a wd black 320gb the other week so will not be switching for abit but when i get round to it the prices should have dropped
 
i suppose there OK if your willing to part your cash for them...if not you could buy a 1TB normal HDD for less and be more patient...loading time who cares! (unless its stupidly slow but then thats your PC)
 
Guy popped into work the other day, he had one and was talking about it.

According to him its insanly fast, stuff loads instantly. Will certainly be very good when the price drops.

My understanding doesnt extend further then our current standard of hard drives

OMG I thought they would be fast but that thing booted quicker than a games console - that is just awesome !

correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it runs like a memory card or flash drive or RAM, the data isn't stored on a disk and therefore you dont have to wait for it to spin up etc.

the only drawback with them I've heard, is that the number of writes and rewrites of a bit of data is a lot lower than HDDs

Much more sensitive to abrupt power loss & magnetic fields.
Limited number of write cycles (~100,000).
Higher power consumption at idle/under low workload than an HDD.
Slower random-write speeds.

They're the main ones I can think of. Other than the obvious of being more expensive per Gb.

What does that mean?

Each location on the SSD can only be written a limited number of times - once they hit that they are no use any more...

most SSD now uses wear levelling (tries to prevent any one location from being written to too many times) and some spare locations above the quoted capacity to improve how long the drive lasts but under continual useage they still last anywhere from months to a couple of years.
