SSDP network chatter

In here and out there.
I've noticed that my PC seems to be sending out quite a lot of network chatter, I fired up Wireshark and sniffed it for a while, it all seems to be SSDP and uPnP related junk.
I know I can disable these features but they are pretty handy for Win7's Homegroup and for MSN Messenger.

My question is: should it still be spamming out such data even when all other parties in the homegroup are offline, Wireshark was coming up with "who is 192.168.100.100?, tell 192.168.100.10" and stuff like that, even though they are no longer active on the net.

Surely once no response can be achieved then it should be considered inactive until that device comes back onstream and multicast announces that it is now live?, or maybe that is too much like common sense.

Anyways, is there any way I can put a stop the background chatter without killing off uPnP and Homegroups?

Cheers.
