Iam sure a few of you are guessing what iam thinking, i have for a long time had a interest in a mineral oil submerged PC as we built one a long time ago as part of my a-levels, however the limitations of the cd drive and the hard drivers not working while wet made the system a messy looking one.

do SSD's work under oil? is anyone adverse of there money enough to find out for me?

;)

my hope is one day pretty much a completely self enclosed pc not much bigger then a current mid sized desktop box completely submerged, wireless internet, keyboards and mouse have solved a few of the issues...

bubbles=win.

i seriously doubt they have 'breathing holes', so should be fine

quick question..

how do you connect cables up to it? like usb etc..

or do you use extensions to the top of the case?

any pics of old project? :)

the old project was never finished a friend might still have some WIP pics il ask him later.

we made a clear plastic box that essentially contained a stripped down pc, several holes were drilled through the back for the various cables, the cables were inserted then sealed with clear silicone, back then this was the power lead, the monitor cable, a phone line and a pair of cables for the K+M, sadly the hdd and the cd rom driver had to be kept outside and were simply left hanging on top.

with wireless dongles and a SSD you will only need 2 holes for the power and monitor, the dvd drive would be the only other possible issue.

theres some interesting projects on youtube if you search for 'oil pc'

i've seen a few before, most were pretty messy..

one way of getting around the silicone problem, would be to use extension cables, and have them popping out near the top

could use them for usb, power, ethernet, vga..

edit..

what sort of viscosity does it have?

I dont know the exact viscosity of mineral oil but its is pretty thin, much thinner then engine oil.

we tested with baby oil, same stuff but smells less 'chemically'.

Mineral oil has a distinctive smell all of its own. It stinks tbh. Though that may have just been in the machines at work.

yeah the mineral oil we use here in the garage is pretty potent stuff, i would definetly fork out the few extra quid a litre for some perfumed baby oil type stuff.

getting a urge now, might have to drag out sketch-up and start planning again... ;)
