SSL causes system to lock up

This has been bothering me, fixing a friends laptop.
When I open a page it seems to work fine, as soon as I try to log onto ebay or go to paypal.com or pretty much anything with SSL or certificates it completly locks up.
Tried in safe mode, uninstalled IE7, tried in Firefox, makes no difference, updated the network drivers. Even did a repair on the Windows installation. I think thats everything I've done.

Any ideas?

EDIT: Done the usaul error checking and virus/spyware scans

Done a HijackThis log?

no not yet, never actually used HijackThis, will do it tomorrow. I thought running in safe mode would stop any suspicious services and processes starting up though

You never know. Any spyware could have nuked a file so even safe mode wouldn't work since the file is still borked.

Too late, the oweners come back, they've decided they are just gonna format it for the sake of ease. Oh well :rolleyes:
