A friend of mine is using 2checkout.com for his site, not sure if it's any good.

It is actually a directory site (phpmydirectory) with 3 pages of items to buy via 2checkout.com.

I believe his server support SSL (and certificate I think) but what do he needs to make use of it? He doesn't need any fancy template like oscommence etc, just simple online payment system within site's existing template, is that possible?

If you're using an external checkout system which will handle sensitive details such as card details, there's no real need for SSL. But to use it, you'll need an SSL certificate and your host can do the rest. You'll then need to enable SSL support in the shopping cart system, which should be a simple config file change in most :)

I find it easier to use an external processing company as it takes all the problems away from you! Have a look at protx.

Right...is that simple? Where do I find it?

The reason is that when people click on checkout in his site, it goes to 2checkout.com page outside his site which is a bit unprofessional and may scare some people away.

Also I was reading some info on SSL and people may be 'comforted' by looking at padlock on checkout within the site! So I thought it might make sense to change over to his own SSL plus free transaction.

I think you're a bit confused. "SSL" doesn't relate at all to how payment is made. You can enable SSL (which will give people the padlock while using the site (Well - depending on the cart, maybe only during checkout), but that doesn't affect operation of the payment gateway (ie, using 2CO)

Look into getting a merchant account with your bank, and then a card capturing service like Protx - that will sort you out with accepting card payments on the site :)

(SSL then becomes a prerequisite)

I think you're right! lol

I know SSL is secure but I'm not sure how payment works, thats the problem but then, it sounds like we would be better off with Protox?
