Can anyone comment on the noise under load for the Gigabyte windforce or VTX X-Edition 7970's ? I have a Twin Frozr 570, under load it's reasonably quiet and I couldn't move to anything louder. I'm thinking of moving to AMD as their cards are a better match for 3D on my S27A950 monitor.

I posted this in the thread on the latest deals page, think it's better asked here.

Can't comment on load noise, but the X-editions are known for coil whine, but it may be I notice more comments of coil whine due to the higher number sold.

The X-edition card i have is nice and quite, cant comment on the coil whine though...as i've either got a card that doesn't do it, or i don't notice it lol...

i can def hear the x edition above 60% fan but otherwise its pretty quiet, but i couldnt say whether it was louder than a 670 as i dont have one to compare.

i also have around 5 case fans and a duel cpu cooler fan setup so i have some reasonable background noise

Thanks for the comments regarding cool whine. I had a gtx 280 that suffered from that and it was very noticeable. Think I'll steer clear of the VTX cards.
I've got a mental block about 3 slot cards like the Asus, but think I'll need to have a look as there's plenty space in my case.

I have a windforce 7970 oc and fans are fine upto 50% but once above 60% i can hear them over my antec 1200 fans at full. Is a very load card at 100% as noisy as ref models if not more, coil whine average.

I'd ruled out the sapphire card as I read reports of coil whine with it.
Will look into the direct cu top..... Picking a card used to be easier than this, lol.

Must be pretty loud then as the 1200 isnt a very quiet case with the stock fans.

Just for the record I have stock GTX670 and that has coil whine. There's been a lot of reports of coil whine with the new 28nm cards from both Nvidia and AMD so staying clear of this issue is harder then it would first appear.

The only cards that don't suffer as much are the ones that have custom pcb's and different power circuitry eg, lightning & asus directcu 2 i believe. They both use more expensive higher grade components.

Also coil whine can be down to a combination of gpu and psu brands. The same gpu with a different psu brand and you don't get coil whine, have been posts about it i think.

Have heard good things about Gigabyte 7970's, again custom PCB with better caps and other uprated components. They do have some coil whine, so not immune but apparently it's less common than reference boards.
