ssshhhhhhhhhhhhh.....

I've received my 2nd VTX X 7970 now. Still has ridiculous coil whine - even below 60 fps.

Should hear the damn thing doing the Windows Experience Index. Not quite sure how to describe it. Possibly a mouse playing a miniature trumpet.

Fans are nice and quiet though.

I think I'll go for the refund this time.

Yes my windforce 7970 oc has whine, not that much but once fans are over 60% and running heaven bench does increase quiet a bit but comes and goes. Once gaming with headset cannot here and in normal use no whine.

Thanks for all the replies, I've read that coil whine can be caused by a combination of psu and graphics card, and seen a few MSI Lightning owners complaining about it as well so it really does seem to be a lottery whether you'll encounter it or not.

I'll stick to my 570 for now, will see if the 7970 Ghz cards are any better/quieter/sound less like the smallest trumpet in the world.

I had the same issue with my 2nd VTX3D. Hideous coil whine, I opted for a refund also, purchased an ASUS 7970 DCII TOP, and get zero coil whine now. I put it down to the fully custom PCB and better components, as there are practically zero complaints of coil whine with this brand.

It could be a combination of PSU and graphics card but generally I believe this is a red herring, and from my own experience it was clearly the graphics card, even putting the card in another PC made no difference.
A fully custom PCB 7970 with better components fixed the issue for me.

Interesting, by the way I have a 7970 windforce and the fans are fine, I never need to go over 50-55% to keep at around the 60c mark, a lot quieter than my xfx 6970;)
Regards

Verrry interesting.
Your OC is slightly lower though, and your CPU is a cooler chip.
What case are you using ?

Yep I went from MSI 7970 OC to Asus 680GTX DCII and it's absolutely bliss now, even got the 680 under water and can't hear any whine whatsoever under any circumstance.

I can't even bring myself to sell the 7970 it would be inflicting torture on someone. :p

Hi forgot what it's called but it's only a midi and very cramped in their I have a water cooled CPU but my set up isn't big enough to wc the gpu.
My next purchase is defiantly a bigger case ;)

Are you not able to RMA it? I did with both of my VTX3D's.

EVGA GTX 680 signature 2 here. Open case. I hear no coil wine (there is a tiny bit at full load but you have to put your ear on the card to hear it)

My old GTX550Ti, much lower on power, had coil whine at load.

glad to hear EVGA is not getting a coil whine.... dunno why they have this issue id be tearing my hair out cos i got sensitive cat ears lol

I think's it's reference PCB but with full 5 PWM phases. Any ref cards should be the same, assuming same components quality.
