Posting this more in frustration and wanting to get a head start on some (more) troubleshooting later..

Background: Built this system back in October mainly as a VM development machine, after some initial teething troubles (RMA'd dodgy RAM kit) seemed to be running sweet. It locked up a few times but I just put this down to workloads.

However, recently it's become more unstable without being heavily loaded, this lead me to believe there is an underlying cause.

First test.. Memtest. This threw up errors on test 6 - block move. all of which seemed to be in the first MB of memory (usually at 0.2MB), so I swapped the RAM around in the slots and tried some different combinations of chips in slots and the errors still came up, again around the 0.2MB mark.

Next.. Re-seated the CPU, doesn't appear to have made any difference (other than running a little cooler with new thermal paste).

Planning to try a different CPU later, only 2011 one I can get my hands on is a Xeon E5-2609, should work for testing purposes right?
Will also try some completely different RAM too.

Am I missing anything here or does anyone have any suggestions? diagnosing issues is bad enough when you have all the gear to test everything out, but when it's higher end and you can't easily get hold of different parts it's a headache!

Thanks in anticipation of any help and pointers.

From the memtest results it sounds like another dodgy RAM stick to me. Memtest 1 stick at a time and find out which one is dodgy, probably needs to be sent back on the warranty.

Would be irritating after the first set of RAM being dodgy too.. Will do a more structured test later!
Just found it odd that even after swapping them around the error came up at the same address.

OK, so 3 sticks in, and all 3 so far have produced errors at 0.2MB.
Now i gather that Memtest tests Cache too..

The test implicitly tests the CPU, L1 and L2 caches as well as the motherboard.

I may be grasping at straws a little early here, so i'll carry on testing, but one would assume that the first memory to be tested would be the cache, and as such 0.2MB would, in theory, point at a cache issue?

So after going through all 8 RAM Chips..
They all failed Memtest test #6 lowest address 0.1MB, highest address 0.2MB

Quick search for CPU cache tester brought up Intel Processor Diagnostic Tools, and behold one monster fail on the CPU.
Just swapped it out for the Xeon chip to run diagnostics against all the RAM again, but i feel a CPU RMA coming on..
