Stability Issues with i7 930

My current system is,
i7 930@4GHZ 1.3v HT on
Corsair H50 Push/Pull
Asus Rampage GENE II
3x2gig G.Skill Ripjaw DDR1600
HIS ATI 5870 1GIG
Corsair HX650watt
2xLG 24x DVD writers
2xSeagate 1TB RAID0
Black Magic Intensity Pro(games used to crash before I added this)

The Problem I'm having is this machine crashes small fft on prime pretty quick (under 10mins) everytime even at stock speeds. But can run blend all day long and LinX 20pass 52glops. Also when gaming the whole system tends to lock up after a few minutes requiring a reboot in games like COD4/BFBC2.

I have tried increasing the Vcore by quite a bit and it made no difference. I tried flashing the GPU with the ASUS 5870 bios but also made no difference. I tried disabling Intel Vitualization in the BIOS and it seemd to make a difference but games tend to take about 30mins to crash then(don't ask me why). I'm running the latest BIOS available from rog.asus.com and I have no clue what the issue is here. I first thought it was the GPU but after testing small fft in prime and seeing it crash so fast I haven't a clue why it's doing that. Does this mean the processor needs to be RMA'd or Motherboard. I only seem to have stability issues with gaming and prime95 small fft. I can render HD stuff in programs like sony vegas and it eats up 100% cpu and most of the ram and the system runs just fine. If the machine is crashing at everything stock then surely some hardware or even hardware setting is causing a fault?

I would appreciate any help on this issue because I'm stumped.

Settings on OC(not that it matters):
BLCK:191@21x
QPI/DRAM: 1.35
DRAM Bus:1.63
PLL: 1.85
ICH: 1.25
IOH: 1.25
Speedstep off C1E off

Download and run mem test.

I had a similar problem last year on my build, 2nd set of OCZ Gold, Mem test would show no errors but the system would fail Prime after pretty much 1hr 15mins and IBT would fail.

In the end bought some new ram (Patriot Viper) and all is going strong :)

You have a different motherboard than I do so I dont know if those settings are default or if you have changed them all, but my machine was more unstable after i had changed the PLL, ICH and IOH to those sort of values. After I had put them back on default "auto" of :-
PLL : 1.80
ICH: 1.10
IOH: 1.10
Then it became more stable immediately.

Just a thought

Those aren't default but the reason I say it doesn't matter is games still freeze with everything set to stock/default. I will however try that pll(1.81) and ioh/ich 1.10

If its freeze up I would always consider monitoring CPU temps to see if the was loose fan/heatsink. I would also suspect I had to change my memory with another P.C to see if the mem was goosed. You have decent components but even the best can fail or be flawed at construction. COD4/BFBC2 are not CPU killers prob 60% CPU users so they would be equally dependant on a good GPU. Try looking at your Security software too as it will have a vast footprint on your computer.

I don't have any security software installed. I've mailed G.Skill and they tell me they only tested the ripjaws on P55 chipsets and cannot guarantee stability on X58 so I'm guessing its the RAM. So I am exchanging these modules for the Corsair Dominator C8 6GB kit which is arriving tomorrow. I know those modules are 100% fine on my board because ASUS and Corsair say it is. Hopefully this solves the issue as I have ordered an additional 6GB so it'll be 12GB of C8 Dominator.

My CPU usage is almost nothing for COD4 prolly 10-20% max. Temps are fine Under prime95 blend it only hits 70degrees max and afaik the i7 930's are fine all the way up to 95-100.

I build a system for a friend (he supplied the parts), and on a P55 chipset there were horrible cold start problems with GSkill Ripjaw DDR1600. We tried just about everything, bios updates, different timings and settings for the ram etc. It would pass memtest for hours, multiple loops no problem, but it would consistantly fail cold booting, it would crash after 5-10 minutes.

Strangely after 1 crash, you could reset, and it would be fine until the next time you turned the computer off. Found lots of posts about this problem on the Gskill forums, and it seems most people get an RMA approved for it..

To cut a long story short, we swapped the ram from GSkill to Corsair, and havent looked back. Perhaps the X58 likes the Gskill even less than the P55 did.

I suppose, I mean I can run everything beside games on it. All my temps are 100% fine including NB and SB. My Corsair sticks arrive today so I'll know for sure if the ram is the issue. I mean like you said it passes memtest for hours same here. I know people say corsair isn't what they used to be with quality but I've never had problems with them as far as stability goes so hopefully this continues with the dominator sticks. They seem to be a popular choice for X58 Oc'ers

What is the memory set to? It's 1.5v for 1066 but needs at least 1.65v for 1600

My biostar mb would set the voltage at 1.64v on auto for 1600 but I found it failed under stress so I had to manually set it to 1.66v. Might be worth a try
