Us Staffordian mortals were pledged this supermarket for Christmas 2015. We roll into 2016 and no cigar, then some out-buildings started to appear - presumably an M Express and petrol station / car wash? Some more faffing about, then the fat cats in the boardroom (with air con) decides to pull the plug, **** £24M into the wind plus 8 months of lost revenue.

Express & Star

Says it's been sold to Triple Jersey Ltd. Any idea what this could end up being? Stafford isn't posh enough for a Waitrose's. We've got the "big 3" already. Sorry I don't register the "big 4" including Morrison's. It's Tesco/Sains/Asda for me. M&S have already moved into a bigger spot in the new Riverside shopping centre. Think we've got an Aldi and a Lidl's as well. So all I can think that's left is a Cash & Carry? Or an independent? Weird though how it dragged on.

Don't know what it could be but you should fully star out the swearie to the mean mods don't shout at you :(

Sounds like a private firm btw.

Triple Jersey buy large retail sites and superstores and rent them out to businesses for huge rent, which is obviously put through Jersey nice and tax free.

They own quite a few ex B&Q stores that were deemed unprofitable by Kingfisher. They will end up renting the site out to a supermarket or building a retail park, if it's big enough.

Wolverhampton has a Waitrose, Stafford is an overall much more pleasant place so you never know!

There really is not much of a difference between Waitrose and the rest now. They did a great job marketting their posh and high quality look but have since used that marketing to add a sense of quality to service as well while bridging the cost gap and stealing customers from the others.

Waitrose is coming to my town which is odd because there are 2 of them, 3 Tescos and a Sains within 3 miles. One of the Tescos being across the road from the new Waits!

Should be be noted that they also have an interest in B&M and they seem to be popping up everywhere!

B&M opened up in the local B&Q store when it closed early this year.

Round here, when Currys bought PC World, they amalgamated the stores and the PC world became a B&M.

I'll have a tenner at evens that it becomes a B&M. Will be good if you like Yank sweets. They do loads.

B&M might be alright if like yank sweets and cheap home decor, but I was in last week and they didn't sell bath soak. Shelves full of shower gel but no bath soak unless you are a kid and want Frozen branded bubble bath as that was all they sold. :o

There is a 10,000 square foot M&S food hall opened recently, which will provide a good quality shop, similar to Waitrose. Tesco, Sainsbury, Morrison's, Asda don't stock the quality of meets or the breadth of more exclusive ranges that M&S and Waitrose do, but most people don't buy those which is why the mistakenly think there is not much difference between Waitrose and others. Also you will find stores will stock to the demographic, so that is why Waitrose Uttoxeter does not stock the same range as Waitrose Lichfield and Uttoxeter feels more 'normal' where Lichfield, with it's wide low isles feels more exclusive and does have a broader range.

I think Stafford is well served and you could get Ocado to deliver I'm sure so have access to everything you need via online shopping. We have shopped online for years and years, rarely do we visit a supermarket unless we have a special occasion, BBQ, party and need stuff quick in which case we will use Waitrose in Lichfield as it's the best in the area and offers better quality meat (high class butcher quality) as well as nicer tasting nibbles and cold cuts etc.

Stafford has really seen a down turn in the last 30 years like all high streets, it use to get many firsts such as one of the very first Next's back in the 80's

Agreed in all of your post, but especially in the quoted line! The Stafford Next has moved a couple of miles out of town into one of those business parks. I don't like it because more shops are following suit, and it makes them inaccessible to non-drivers like myself. Sure some people don't drive out of choice, but I was ruled out by a professional on eyesight grounds so I don't get the choice. Therefore I find business parks discriminatory. Agreed though that there is online shopping too. It's just that I like to hang out with friends in town over a coffee while shopping, and the business parks are gradually taking that away from me.

Space race is well and truly over for supermarkets, all developments around the big 4 have stalled. It's all about consolidating against the discounters currently

you're not alone. In a town near to where I live, they knocked down an old Sainsburys (which had an an Aldis, a big chippy resturant & a market shop taking up the space) & the towns leisure centre, In order to build a Morrisons.

I thought that was lunacy, as it would have to compete with said Aldis on the same square (it moved into a purpose built store) a Lidl & a massive Tesco all within 5 Minutes walk, there is 2 Morrisons 10 Minutes drive from the site too.

Needless to say they finished the Building & their bosses pulled the plug, but The Range store moved in there instead so it's not wasted.
