Staggered upgrade

It's about time i upgraded my rig as its getting a bit long in the tooth but due to a recent house purchase (which should complete 2 weeks before xmas ) I'm going to have to stagger my purchases. Current system is:

720be tricore
4gb ddr2
gigabyte 790x ud4
amd hd7850 2gb
120gb m4 ssd (os drive)
a couple of hdd cant remember size or brand but a good 1.5tb between them
coolermaster igreen 600w

As I tend to try to wring a good 5 years out of my hardware I was thinking of heading skylake. The plan would be the following:

1. cpu, mobo, ram upgrade and reuse everything else of a couple of months.
2. upgrade gpu and new ssd for games and programs
3. Case, psu and cooler

As I said I'll have to stagger this over a couple of months, I can afford to go all in but just want to hold some money back for any new household purchases and to keep the other half happy.

Now as I mainly game with my system I was wondering if could swap out the gpu first instead? my budget for my first step is about £450 after that I was thinking £300 a time.

At 1920x1200, in all honesty would I be better following my initial plan and resuse my 7850? Or would my current system be able to get reasonable performance out of a more modern gpu for the time being?

First off, two weeks before Christmas, you're either really smart or really dumb. ;)

A 7850 should be able to run a fair amount of games, If i where you I'd make cpu, ram and board your first step. I wouldn't say skylake is any more future proofed than DC and DC will be cheaper so its up to you there. Just pick one of the bundles available. and maybe grab a better PSU or SSD then come next upgrade time spend it all on a card and you'll be sorted.

That is until you get the upgrade itch again.

i would upgrade gpu first, that would give you the grunt needed for gaming . all other things can then follow.
As I'm still running a old phenom ii would it be an actual upgrade or more of a side ways step in performance? There doesn't seem to be many 970/390 benchmarks with a similar cpu so I'm not sure if the two would play nicely (avoiding any bios issues I've seen mentioned).

Neither, unlucky would be a better word. We were supposed to have been done and dusted by the end of October

As long as it runs fallout 4 for now (reasonably) I'd be happy.

Noted, I'm aware performance between the two is slight but I'm just trying to avoid my usual pitfall of buying into a dead socket.

I've had that dreaded itch for the past year, but the other half felt our first home was more important. But alas I can wait no longer :D

How selfish of her? :o ;)

Have a google you'll find something somewhere about how well it runs.

Can't blame you for worrying there but I doubt you'll ever need to upgrade if you buy on the z170 socket cause it probably won't be worth it. Personally I would just go DC. Up to you though.

I know! :p

Cheers for the input.
