Been playing the original STALKER for about 2 hours. Still in rookie camp but going out for a few missions (just got past 'electrocuted railway bridge').

The thing is on Stalker I am always absolutely skint with regards to ammo. The ONLY place I can find ammo is on corpses, and then it's like - 8 bullets. It takes approx. 8 pistol bullets to kill 1 person!

I've asked many people to 'trade' but no-one has any ammo or guns to sell they've just got peices of bread and stuff..

So basically I have to be a real ***** with regards to what I shoot. And a lot of the time I'm taking out lesser bad-guys with the knife just to save on the 5 odd bullets I have left :(

Question 1) Is this the way the game was designed or am I missing some clear, obvious way to buy bullets? Is the game supposed to be ultra-stingy on the ammo and make you really care about when you're using ammo?

Question 2) Seperate point .. when I press '6' I get some kind of wierd thing in my hand. Pressing left button makes it limply fall to the ground then I get another one. Right mouse brings up some wierd power thing but whatever time I release it limply falls to the ground .. very bizarre .. what is it?

Thanks for any help ..

It does start off this way.. Very little ammo and stuff but keep with it..

Keep on that path you mention.. Don't deveate away.. you'll soon come to one of the the faction camps (can't remember which one).. You'll know you are there bacause their is a barrier with loads of dead dogs.. Enter the camp, find the bar and trade..

The item you are holding could be one of many artifacts found around the area.

I think key 6 are bolts? I just started playing this myself, and i think you use them in conjunction with the contaminated areas, something about your brain boiling?

I'm only about an hour into it myself.

use the bolts to throw at the anomolies to see where they are.

Stick with it you'll love it.

You will need some clean pants later on thoguh as it gets well scary in places, i remember having to have a break to clam down.

Yeah you can struggle for ammo, even towards the end I used to carry several guns on me cause I'd just burn through ammo.

Yep, 6 is bolts. You're suppose to use them to detect for anomalies, in reality they are useless and you'll only ever run into about 3 anomalies throughout the whole game.

oh yea I'll definately stick with it I like it a lot ..

I was just in fear that I'd play for 15 hours then suddenly think OMG I can get as much extra ammo as I want if I just trade with this particular guy I wish I'd known that 14 hours ago as I've been ***** with ammo pointlessly this whole time'!!

1. At the start of the game, yes you are really struggling for bandages, bullets, anti-rad, food, a decent weapon. The game is designed that way - it's supposed to be about surviving in a harsh environment as much as it is about shooting bad guys. Once you get out of the first area (Cordon) into the Garbage you will start picking up amo and slightly better guns.

At this stage, the rule is: Loot every corpse, search every building, break every crate, open every safe/stash

Also, to conserve ammo - headshot every human if you possibly can, and use the shotty on the beasts/dogs etc

Later on you will get some awesome guns to play with and be armed to the teeth. Vintar BC in single fire mode will take down pretty much everything and you'll never be without ammo. But it's quite a while til you get your hands on one of them.

2. That sounds like a bolt - looks a little bit like a spark plug in your hand? You throw them at the anomilies to help find them. For example, the electrical one in the tunnel you recently encountered - you can use the bolts to make it discharge so you can get through easier. You have an unlimited supply of these bolts. Can't remember off the top of my head, but i think you just hold left mouse and then release to throw them.

The soldiers guarding the bridge were hard as nails and killed me twice before I found the alternative 'electocuted tunnel' way through. I did have to attack them all starting with a total of 6 bullets and a knife though :\ didn't stand a prayer ..

I am playing on only the second difficulty down (is it 'stalker'?).

Perhaps I'm just retarded at computer games ;)

If you're right at the start and short of ammo I can either suggest that you do some side missions or loot every corpse you find of everything and sell them to Sidorovich in the underground bunker.

Nah, Stalker level is still a pretty hard difficulty level in SOC.

The way i got the guys at the bridge was to climb up onto the railtracks on the bridge itself. You can find a high vantage point to shoot them from then where you can get out of sight again quickly. If you do this at night with your light off, you can track them by their lights to pick them off.

I have another good tip for this stage of the game. There is a very good piece of equipment hidden in Cordon that will help you, but it's really hard to find if you don't know where it is. If you don't want to know about it, don't read on:

It's hidden in the roof of a building in the Rookie camp right at the start. Climb the ladder next to the Stalker who gives you the mission to attack the farm. Edge along the side of the roof until you can climb onto it, then run along the roof and jump onto the next building. If you skirt round the roof of this building you'll find part of it is broken, and there's a crate inside it. The item is in the crate.

Hi all.
Just started playing this as well.
One thing I defo recommend you all doing if you haven't already is to update your game to the 10005 patch (fixes lots of issues) then install COMPLETE 2009 1.4.3.2 game mod, it makes a HUGE difference to graphics/textures/day,night cycle/starry night skies/weapons/gives you switchable 3rd person perspective...everything...ace.
I think you have to do the 10005 patch before you play otherwise it messes with your save game files and you`d have to start again, not sure though.
Well worth doing.

It is a hard game in general, especially the later levels.

I remember one particular section where I was hammering the medkit button and sprinting like crazy. Then the radiation came.
