Hey guys.

I've seen screenshots of stalker and it looked like a good game with really good graphics, however, after installing it and settings graphics to high I realise that the graphics aren't all that good.

Are people using mod packs like you can do for Oblivion?

Cheers

There's one called S.H.A.R.P.E.R. that helps a bit but there's a thread here somewhere going through some of the mods for Stalker which a quick Search should reveal.

Yep, it's just that the gun detail and NPC detail aren't very good. The scenery is quite nice though.

Yeah I just found the textures a bit dated, Clear Sky looks much better. Although I was very impressed with the environments and the anomolies and the dynamic lighting.

Its a fairly damn poor lookin game frankly whatever you do to it. Games need to spend 95% of power and dev time on textures, design and whatever else, and 5% of available gpu power on lighting and fancy effects as thats about what determines how games look.

Games should look great with lighting turned off and just a little better with them on in general or they will look poor overall either way. Stalker so over uses lighting effects and HDR that it runs pretty poorly for how it looks. Sprites for grass crap isn't uncommon, but for so much of it and so overused, low quality models for most stuff. Its just not at all impressive bar some of the lighting but at the end of the day, if all the lighting effects are lighting bland looking textures who cares.

Last poster is right, if you go ahead and play the game it won't matter. The game is so pathetically bad and boring that the graphics wouldn't make it better if it was the best looking game in the world. Crap senseless story, boringly linear gameplay for a "open" game, pathetically stupid AI, 100% completley pointless sidequests, pointless faction/reputation grinding. UNrealistic increase in power without real increase in enemy power, ludicrous weapons.

The game works well for about an hour, maybe two, then its stupidly easy with no scripted battles and no decent fights. Two fights in the game really, first farm, and a scrapyard in the next zone are great, everything else sucks.

:o you know a lot of that is rubbish. a LOT of the grass is modeled and sways with the wind. a lot of the textures are very detailed and are improved further with mods. those 'unrealistic power increases' are all sorted with mods and how exactly are the weapons ludicrous? i could take a few screen grabs but i doubt that would change your opinion at all.

because you'd be wrong.

Guns ludicrous, lets take an AK47, give it a modded version with increased firing rate. Now the early version will simply not hit the same spot repeatedly firing at a wall one shot at a time from any range, it hits in a cone, which frankly is impossible for a gun. But the increased firing rate version, which can do nothing but decrease accuracy, becomes a gun that can hit the same point repeatedly in single fire(where it should be identical), kills the same enemies much quicker with less shots and is a lot more accurate in burst firing. But its not really that gun, its simply first guns are all on purpose completely freaking useless, then suddenly after that point guns all become pinpoint accurate and you can headshot anyone at any distance with any gun. THats simply not realistic. Past that 2nd decent fight in the scrapyard thats not another single scripted fight like it, and no decent fights after it. Theres zero good AI past that point. THe guns from that point on are ridiculously, and unrealistically great and the artifacts make you ridiculously strong while the enemy only gets easier(well, dumber).

But that all ignores the main story, wake up, don't know who you are, someone asks you to go murder a bunch of people for money, no reason, no why, you just go do it. Thats really awful story right there, in a "rpg" style game you are supposed to be given choices. YOu decide to get to the core, and people attack you en route and you fight back is one thing, going out to simply murder people for money is quite another and theres no choice, nothing to explain why you would. The endings are really awful, the story throughout is weak. None of the side quests are remotely worthwhile, nothing you can buy can't be found BEFORE you are allowed to buy them, its ridiculously easy from scrapyard fight onwards, which is the majority of the game.

Everything is done badly in the game. Swaying doesn't mean its not sprites, its called animation, been done for hundreds of years, used to be done on flick books. 2 sprites flicked between each other, 10 sprites flicking from one to another. Very little in the game looks good at all. THe design of the area is great, and thats the only reason it looks fairly decent. Like i said, design time and mostly texture quality are the keys to making a game look great, not lighting cycles and lightning in the background, whoopdedoo. maybe i can just look at the sky for the entire game, then it looks great.

of course im wrong. as if other rpg-style shooter have given you any more freedom, or have a better story line, or better ai. you dont like the game thats fine. but your arguing over a lot of points that dont apply any more, or certinaly arent any worse than any other game.

i seem to recall you complaining about graphics, even though you wouldnt run it with full lighting and effects which you said yourself made a big difference, and all because the framerate was a little low at the time. thats improved MASSIVELY as awell. i have the same 8800gtx that you did when stalker was released remember, and now there is no problems with framerates with everything up full, so that is a non-issue. the guns, artifacts, items and weather have all been overhauled with mods and patches. yes the game is very unbalanced out of the box but it isnt if you add some of the mods. looks a lot better too. in its current state, it is a very enjoyable and challanging game. but if that isnt good enough for you drunknemaster, then you mustn't like very many games eh?

Loved it - flawed but hugely enjoyable. Busy re-playing it with the Oblivion Lost mod - if you didn't like the AI before try it now - if anything they're a bit too good - been scared witless for the past 2 hours creaping around trying not to get caught :D

There are now some great mods to alter balance/gameplay/GFX/weather and loads of other things - if you don't like something, stop whinging and enjoy the fact that the developers were open-minded enough to open up the SDK and the community was talented/dedicated enough to provide a solution for each and every one of your whims - however odd they might be ;)

If you can't enjoy Stalker now you are either terminally lazy or simply not cut out for this genre - perhaps Mario Carts instead?
