Hi, Could anyone give me a list of the best mods to start out with. Ive recently just picked this up for the first time and looking on moddb I'm not sure which ones to get.

Stalker Lost Alpha, not really a mod as its the full game.
Best thing is that its free. Though a little buggy but I've played it through with no mega issues.
I'm a fan of the original and absolutely loved this version. Can't recommend it enough :)

The complete mod is decent one to try out for your first time with stalker. When I get more time, I'll have a dig around to see if I can find anything better. You won't go wrong with the complete mod though.

The Complete mod is very pretty. Was nice playing the final level in bright sunshine instead of a miserable downpour.

Was going to go with complete mod but seen this S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Mod Pack 2013 by boredgunner so ill give this a shot.

Holy thread revival!

Recently installed SOC and modded it to stalker complete, which is very nice but having completed this game multiple times I'm after a different mod

Any suggestions?

I'll have a proper think later but in the meantime, OGSE is a pretty good one - especially in terms of the story. I think in that regard, it ranks higher than most of the others I've played.

As mentioned below, Stalkersoup is a very good option. I really must get around to trying it out again, it's been an age since I've looked that up.

A few others that are worth a look:

There are loads more on moddb and other sites.

Thought I'd plonk it in a recent thread seeing as there's a ton of Stalker threads already. I hope the OP doesn't mind. A mod can always move it if they want.

Was there ever a way to play this with a controller?

Seem to remember trying to play this but years of controller use mean I just don’t get on with a K&M any more.

I just use "joytokey". It's free, but i bought the licence as it's a good program. I set X button to become a bind key. So X plus Left would be an additional key for example. This gives a controller enough available buttons. And i use Space as quicksave.

Aiming can be a little tough, but even on veteran mode (hard mode), i didn't have much issue. Just got to get that sensitivity set favourably.

SoC is a quality game, and the first time i ever played it was this year.
