I was playing Stalker and my mobo and RAM threw a hissy fit. One of my sticks of RAM stopped working, and I had to reset the CMOS on my mobo. I am running a P35C-DS3R, E4500, 3GB PC5300 Ballistix and 3850. I've sent the RAM back under the warranty, so that isn't an issue, but should I risk playing Stalker again? I was just getting into it!

It seems there may be a bad batch of Ballistix memory, mate of mine got some from OcUK and that turned out to be faulty aswell, theres mention of it in other forums of it failing and having to be sent back, think a guy on here had to send his bacl 3-4 times!

So stick with Stalker, its an awesome game!

YES - get rid of it.

I stopped playing it about half way through. Incredibly boring game!

How far did you get exactly? How did you know it was half way? lol

Personally, it's the most immersive game I've played in ages. I can see how you'd find it boring though, because it is slow to start and if you treat the game like a traditional linear fps, you'll quickly become annoyed and frustrated. Stalker is and always was intended to be more of a explorer/escapist type game which is exactly what I love about it.

I was looking for something like this, but think it becomes too non linear too quickly. Even after a few missions, there seems to be too much to do - a slightly more linear approach to start with would have been best. Plus it showed its age right from the start - compared to the competition (HL2 et al) it looks drab and uninteresting.

Plus theres the manifold technical issues. I actually had to get the NOCD crack to get the game to work! Absolutely crazy.

I was really really looking forward to the game when it was first shown, I even played a MP alpha at Gamestars - but 3+ years down the line, there's much better on offer imo.

I personally got very bored literally within the first 2 hours. Always seemed to get radiation poisoning, the game didn't explain how to stop it and I died many times. Not fun.

That was the stage of the game that I had just got past when my RAM died-I agree that I don't see how a game could kill the RAM (don't worry, I'm not a total idiot!) but I have read about a fair few oddities which seem to occur with Stalker. Meh, I will risk it and see what happens!

The radiation poisoning is easy enough to overcome - you just had to scavenge items off other stalkers you killed / found - alcohol numbs its effects for a time but you get blurry vision if you drink too much and there are also plenty of radiation meds about if you look - I'm playing it on the 2nd from hardest setting and there are more than enough around - trading/scavenging is key ;)

Don't put on anomalies that raise the radiation and stay away from places that give you radiation.

Also get a better suit, there is a suit hidden on a house in the STALKER camp near the underground trader.

I think this sort of thing is my main problem with the game. I really enjoyed it once I got into it (and to be honest, I used a guide for the first 30 mins or so of the game so I could get a feel for it and not miss vital items that make the game far more fun and yet aren't pointed out to you in any way).

I can understand that the game isn't a 'hold your hand' type affair, but I do think that it'd be far more accessible if it at least showed you the ropes and made the start of the game *slightly* more forgiving for people that haven't got a grasp of the way the game world works yet.

I agree, but the stuff like radiation wasn't too difficult to understand, you are in an aera close to an exploded nuclear reactor and if you look at the stats of anomalies you can see radiation in red and it follows the basic principle of RPG's that every advantage in one stat also means a disadvantage in another stat.

My view of STALKER is that it could be a very good game but isn't a pure classic due to the confusion about what to do and the bugs in the game.

All in all I enjoyed it very much and can't wait for STALKER Clear Sky alter this year.

Yeah, the radiation wasn't too hard to deal with - more the general feel that you're missing a lot as you start to play through. And how much your weapons/equipment suck at the start :) I think the first time I played through (and gave up), I had my pistol collection and very little healing whilst loads of guys were running through the woods with sub machine guns. Second time through though, not a problem.

I'm also looking forward to Clear Sky. Should be very interesting indeed :)

One of the things they fixed in a patch is the accuracy at long range and the ability of the enemies to shoot thru steel was removed, in the original release the game is a challenge.
