Stalker-should I ditch it?

I've yet to find it but the weapon you get given in the final 'Arena' battle at the Duty camp is really good!!! If I can loot it from someone or trade/buy it I will as the accuracy is far and away the best of any weapon I've used in stalker.

I quite liked stalker. Some annoying story holes at the start of the game and a few annoying smaller aspects here and there but fun nonetheless. People who thought the game was boring probably didn't like the constant running from place to place and only getting into gun battles the odd time? The AI whilst not being brilliant was still challenging and fun especially when you had a team with you. The multiple endings they put in are pretty stupid though.

Hopefully Fallout 3 will be a decent game with that sort of atmospheric feel to it similar to Stalker.

For anyone whos played STALKER - "Get out of here, stalker"! You get that line a million times when you run past a random AI in the quest region :p

Dump it mate,

I dont think i have ever wanted to play a game so much, get it then discard it in the same day.............

I was looking for something like this, but think it becomes too non linear too quickly. Even after a few missions, there seems to be too much to do - a slightly more linear approach to start with would have been best. Plus it showed its age right from the start - compared to the competition (HL2 et al) it looks drab and uninteresting.

Plus theres the manifold technical issues. I actually had to get the NOCD crack to get the game to work! Absolutely crazy.

I was really really looking forward to the game when it was first shown, I even played a MP alpha at Gamestars - but 3+ years down the line, there's much better on offer imo.

What settings are you playing it on? With full settings (mainly the "fully dynamic lighting" mode), the game beats HL2 hands down, including the two episodes.

I'm a big fan of the HL2 engine and its general artistic direction and I do think Stalker shares many similarities with it, but ulitimately the Stalker universe is much more detailed, larger, open ended and in general, a step up in every aspect (particularly in the atmosphere generation department).

Also note that the game has become a lot more stable with the latest patches and the performance has improved noticeably. It's still not perfect but a lot of the annoying glitches have been fixed.

been thinking of giving stalker a go, have they fixxed all the crash bugs from ages ago? also what mods would be worth installing?

There are far less bugs now, I'm not running the very latest patch and it's been pretty stable - just one crash but that didn't occur again.

The one thing that I love about the game is its atmosphere, when it's night and there's a thunderstorm I don't want to go out into the wilderness - I have to hang around until dawn - that's something I can say hand on heart no other game has ever done to me!

I've just installed stalker with all the updates and soon as I start the game, the THX sign appears and the PC just dies. It doesn't start up again by me pressing the power button on the PC, I have to completely power down the whole PC via the plug switch on the wall.

Anyone have any ideas to why this is happening?

(sorry for jumping on this thread, seemed silly to create another thread on possibly same'ish issue.)

Specs in sig.

EDIT: Temps on GPU and CPU are fine (GPU 50 stock - CPU all 4 around 38 idle) ~ Drivers: Latest betas
Just had a tinker and changed the compatability mode on "XR_3DA.exe" to win xp and it got a bit further to the menu screen then died again.

I just finished stalker recently myself (with the proper ending), After the garbage area it starts getting better and more fun when you get more choice of weapons, armor and artifacts.

I was very lucky to get the proper ending, i almost never did the mission to see the doctor since it was a long walk back. Totaly worth it to finish the game properly and understand more about the story.

I got the 'money' ending. At the time I thought that was the overall ending and I was absolutely stunned at how bad it was. Then I found out there were more depending on circumstances :D Looked a few up on youtube afterwards

Hah. I know what you mean. One of the best parts is when you reach a later part of the game which features a massive dose of radiation in the surrounding area. Without spoiling it too much there's a very nicely done 'effect' that appears on your screen, which again adds to the atmosphere
