Stand your ground

Stand your ground only applies when your life is in danger, for example someone is coming at you with a knife. A random person walking on your property and knocking on the door doesn't count and that's why this home owner will be going to jail for 20 years plus. If you absolutely don't want strangers on your property then put up a damn fence and gate

Americans are just dumb *****

Some years back the issue got a lot of local coverage because a guy went to the states on holiday and was shot dead when he knocked on someone's door to ask for directions. Clearly it's still a problem.

It's just utterly bonkers that people believe it's acceptable to murder someone else in cold blood just because they are on your property and haven't even done anything to put you in real fear of being attacked.

Stranger on my porch? Shoot first and ask questions later...

Its not the first time there was a black guy who was shot dead simply for walking through a neighbourhood a year or two ago he went to prison for a long time iirc. Its not about just because they're on your property its a fear of robbery etc black guy on your lawn? Must be an armed robber/hood thug.

How would an average US citizen know this? This know nothing, virtually nothing, they hear a set or words, make an assumption, shoot first, lawyer up later.
''Stand your ground - that means i can shoot anyone for any reason, as long as they are on my property.''
You could probably ask half the senate and they would agree with you.

The laws are terribly implemented and terribly understood. Sadly the US is unlikely to ever change in our lifetimes.

Knock Knock

Have you found jesus/double glazing/internet/trick would soon become a thing of the past if allowed in the UK.

I guess with a nation of so many that are allowed to handle lethal weapons, anything is possible.

I like the idea of bbc licence tax collectors being first in line :D

The mass ownership of lethal weapons is dumb. The stand your ground law (or at least the public perception of what it means) seems to make the situation worse.

I haven't really gone looking for historic data, but my perception from the stories of which I am aware, is that it tends to be older white men doing the shooting in these cases.

The US isn't exactly renowned for having great mental health care provision (unless you are rich/well insured) but it does have a reputation for violent crime. And lots of gun ownership. Aside from there probably being at least some racists who would take the chance to shoot a non white person unlucky enough to knock on their door, there must be a lot of borderline "crazy" folk our there who are also gun owners. A diet of Fox News and social media, or maybe just some run of the mill regular paranoia, combined with being able to keep a loaded gun near your door "just in case" does seem unlikely to end well for unexpected visitors.
