Got BT coming to our house this week, and am not planning on using the BT HH for a second longer than necessary.

First time on an FTTC VDSL connection so I'd just like to know if people keep the HH in modem mode and rely on a standard Wireless router, or shall I just sell the HH and get an aftermarket VDSL2 router?

I'm currently reading this article to see which ones are recommended in the case of going for the latter.

You have a few options.

If you want a one box solution then TPLink, Billion or Nergear all tend to get positive feedback for integrated VDSL modem/routers, Asus do not. If you'd like the flexibility and extras of DDWRT/Tomato 3rd party firmware's then consider the above and add Asus into the mix and use the HH5 in modem only mode, you could if you prefer jump ship and pick up an ECI/r or HG612 ex BTO VDSL modem and achieve the same, an ECI/r goes from under £10 and HH5's seem to shift for £30ish without much issue.

The advantage of not having a single box solution is that you can reboot/change settings/flash firmware's till your heart is content without it having DLM kick in. Personally I get much better coverage with a centrally located UnifiAP than I ever did with an all in one router and as I needed a WRT based router I went with a dedicated modem, separate router running a VPN AP and a UnifiAP running wifi for everything else.
