Standby and restart problems

Hi guys,

A few months ago I built my first PC :D . Spec as follows:

CPU: Intel Q8400
Mobo: Gigabyte EP35
VGC: BFG 9500
O/S: XP SP3

My problem is this, 9/10 when I put the PC into standby mode I have to do a complete reboot when I return to the PC as I get 1 long beep followed by 2 short ones. I then have to press the reset button in order to get the correct one beep. :confused:The same thing happens when I have to restart the computer after installing software and updates.

After I had finished the original build I also had problems with booting up, but solved this problem by shorting out the CMOS jumper pins and resetting the BIOS to load the optimized defaults.

I would be really grateful if someone can solve this problem.

What OS are you running and is the system still running on optimized defaults or have you introduced a clock since then?

EDIT: Sorry just noticed the XP SP3 in your original post - so my only question is is BIOS still operating on defaults?

You could check that the memory settings are set up correctly and that it has been allotted the required amount of 'recommended' operating voltage - if you've allowed the BIOS to set these settings.

Also, you may want to try upping the vCore 1 or 2 increments - just in case it's similar to a cold boot issue (taking into account your original pronlems before the CMOS reset.)

Hi PLec,

The BIOS have remained pretty much the same since I solved the original booting up problem. I have enabled USB keyboard and a few other things but have not changed anything radically.

I will check the memory settings and the operating voltage along with the possible vCore issue; will post back later and let you know!

Apologies for the lenghty delay in getting back to you!

The Vcore is set at 1.268v and the operating voltage for the memory is 1.872v.

I am very wary of messing around with trhe voltage settings in case I end up with more problems than I solve!!

Rather high considering That I have 1.2V for my overclocking but apparently these lower specced models are also actually worser chips.
memory is 1.872v.
What's the specified value for memory you're using?
Most DDR2 modules need clearly more than JEDEC standard.


One long and too short beeps from BIOS seems to often indicate "video card" problem...
So there might be problem in card or maybe Nvidia is just lazy and needs good kick for getting it into work.

Thanks for your reply; I downloaded a data sheet from Kingston's website that stated:

Kingston's KHX8500D2K2/4G is a kit of two 256M x 64-bit 2GB (2048MB) DDR2-1066 CL5
SDRAM (Synchronous DRAM) memory modules, based on sixteen 128M x 8-bit DDR2 FBGA
components per module. Total kit capacity is 4GB (4096MB). Each module pair has been tested to
run at DDR2- 1066MHz at a latency timing of 5-5-5-15 at 2.2V. The SPD is programmed to JEDEC
standard latency 800Mhz timing of 5-5-5-18 at 1.8V. Each 240-pin DIMM uses gold contact fingers
and requires +1.8V.

What confuses me is that in the blink of an eye it gives two different voltage settings of 2.2V and 1.8V. As mine is currently 1.872 is that enough bearing in mind my PC boots up with no problem when initially switched on?

Any help will be gratefully accepted.

Those specs mean that if memory is running at standard DDR2-800MHz speed then 1.8V is enough.
But if they're running above it they're likely to need more quite fast and achieving that DDR2-1066MHz speed isn't guaranteed with below 2.2V voltage.
 
You could try turning off the PC's ability to go to sleep... That would be a workaround for the immediate problem.
