I use my second monitor for hardware monitoring stuff or maybe a film on the side, but mainly hardware stuff and i hate having to re-position all the programs every start so i hibernate.

How much strain does this put on my system? Say if i standby when im not using during the day and hibernate every night

Wont be any strain on the system although everything technical including mobile phones etc all benefit from a shutdown/restart every so often

hibernate does use the least power however if your using an SSD then id suggest sleep mode instead. This is because hibernate will save everything thats open onto the drive so it can be reopened where you left off once you wake the system.

Sleep mode does the same except saves them all onto your RAM

As above, hibernate isn't great for an SSD as it'll write all your memory to the disk when you shut down. It does 0 power as the machine is off though.

Just sleep it, that uses minimal power anyway & instant on when you want it.

Realistically with modern equipment there's little in it. If you use the PC frequently then simply let it go to sleep, if it's not required for longer periods hibernate.

It's the same old flourescent lamp argument where the argument was that leaving the light on used less power and was less stressful on it than turning it on/off each time you enter a room, in reality it made little difference. Parts break, if it's going to break it'll do so regardless but modern components have a huge amount of tolerance built in, most of us don't run our CPUs at 90 degrees, GPU at 90+ and PSU maxed out constantly month after month, yet those components can do that, it's simply not best practice.

Cheers guys! I'll avoid hibernation for the sake of my ssd.

Whats the general lifespan of an ssd anyway?

Had my 128 OCZ Vertex 3 for 5 years or so now and it's still going strong, full speed as a 2nd drive :)

ssdlife still said something like 8 years left the last time I checked.
