Standby & Hibernation

Hibernation saves your memory to hard disk and powers the macine down.

Standby suspends to RAM, and remains in a low power state.

Hibernation uses less energy, but takes longer to start up.

If you shut the power off whilst in standby you will loose all unsaved work, Hibernate allows you to turn power off and restart without any loss of of information.

I see thanks. I'm not too botherd about unsaved work etc. It's just the power usage. In standby it is pretty minimal anyway is it not though?

how do you come out of hibernation ?
whats the vista equilivilant ? sleep ?

No.

Sleep/standby/suspend = low power state. Affected by power loss.
Hibernation = shutdown with physical memory dumped to hard drive. Unaffected by power loss.
