As much as I love my comfy chair, I can't help but feel a standing desk would be better in the long run.

Has anyone used one in anger? From reading it seems a lot of people either don't stick with it or don't give it long enough to adjust. Interested to read some experiences.

I have one at work. I find if i'm just doing simple things like reviewing numbers etc then it's a nice change, it's also nice when you're going through things with someone as it's easier to crowd round rather than having chairs.

If i'm trying to really focus on something though i just seem to be unable to do it whilst standing up and have to sit back down. Not sure if thats just a mental thing though!

Yeah. Mine is electric (think it's from IKEA), so i have buttons and can raise/lower it whenever i want. A place i interviewed about a year ago had desks which had a hand round winch to adjust the height.

I wouldn't want one that you couldn't adjust quickly.

A lot of people at work have ones that work as both. So they'll stand for half the day, then switch to a seated desk when they get bored of following the latest health kick that will no doubt pass in a few months. I remember when everyone started sitting on swiss balls at work as well, that lasted long...

I personally wouldn't use one, when I sit at my desk at home, it's to game or code, both require me being comfy for me to properly concentrate/be immersed. Standing for prolonged periods of time is not comfy

What if I do calf raises while standing? ;)

It wouldn't be for supposed healthy benefits, more so that sitting for long periods wrecks my mobility.

Perhaps the middle ground could be to take more frequent breaks to stretch and move.

I'm afraid a lifetime of calf raises will not help your cause, RIP fellow no calf bro

But, for your last point...Do exactly that, I make sure I stick to the Apple Watch hourly reminders to stand up, and take that chance to go grab a drink or walk about for a couple of minutes. It doesn't help that I work from home 90% of the time these days, but it does make it feel less weird just aimlessly walking around for 2 minutes

Had mine at work for 6 months now, I have an old injury which makes sitting for extended periods painful; it's a sit/stand motorised desk - It's helped immensely.

Not sure if I could go full standing all through the day though, I did that when I was a Prison Officer and it wrecked my knees/ankles.

Been using standing desks for around 3 years now. If I couldn’t stand I would have to give up work due my back problems. Have varidesks at home and work.

It takes a while to get used to them. Where as others in work gave up, I had no choice. I’m used to it now.

One more thing make sure you get a decent mat to stand on.

I have an electric vari-height desk. As others have mentioned, I stand for some things (taking calls) but sit for detail work. I had a bad back for a while but this new desk has completely cured it so that's a win.
I also use a wireless ergo mouse (from Anker) which stopped the ache in my forearm (which I only belatedly realised was RSI). I wouldn't mind but I'm not the world's most active mouse user and still got an ache.

Have you though about using a trackball for your wrist ?

Ahh, people who use their standing desk for taking calls, so they can talk LOUDER and annoy everyone else in the open space... Because you know, you're STANDING, it's supposed the be loud.

I have an electric standing desk too. Only problem is that I work in electronics engineering, so if I were to raise the desk, all the cables would pull about 50k worth of equipment to the floor. That's something the hipster brigade haven't thought about...

Funny thing is, same office with fancy desk doesn't have proper blinds, so you get to stand/sit with your gizmo, but you are blinded half the day by the light from the window, and you can't concentrate because of the people next to you raising their desks to take skype calls so that CAN TALK LOUDER. Oh, and you have ****** screens I would not even /think/ of buying, a crap keyboard I replaced with one of mine, and a ****** mouse as well.

BUT there is a standing desk and a poor looking green plant next to it, because lurvely.

I worked a few months in the Nordics last year where these seem to be pretty much standard. The Swedes in particular were amazed when I told them that not one of our 600 contact centre staff had them!
