Star Trek Online

My thoughts exactly! Infact they have a closed Beta coming up soon!

Er, btw, can I make this into the "Official OCUK Star Trek Online" thread? (Is it allowed by normal users to do that?)

Closed beta has been going for a month already, only two 2 hour sessions a week though still. Customizing the look of your ship is pretty good, the rest is very average after you get over the initial coolness factor of the newbie mission.

Have they changed the person views and combat? That looked like a joke when people stood one foot away al shooting eachother with phasers lol

I am interested in the ship combat but just looks meh to me.

Hmm doesnt sound encouraging :(
So you think the game is average guys?

Erm wheres my post?

I thought that too. And tbh, when I saw it, I did think that it was a bit of "negative-ish" post. Hence why its probably been deleted :)

(Please do not slate/kill/ban/permaban me - just saying :()

But back OT! So is the closed beta so far looking a bit average? I would very much like to hear any beta testers opinions (as far as any NDA lets them ofcourse!)

I soooo want this game to be good but the gameplay trailer looks a tad meh. :(

Ooh I dunno! The bit where there were a few Federation ships attacking that Borg ship, I thought that was awesome! Bit like a few of the encounters with the Borg from the various episodes of TNG, DS9 and Voyager!

Thing is, it looked awful.

Starfleet Armada II (was that the name? I really should buy another copy of that game, it's ace) looked better.

I'll most likely buy it anyway and persevere for a few months hoping I'll get hooked but I'm not getting my hopes up.

No open PvP between people who are at war with each other seems a bit weak too.

Sounds like the same way they conducted the Champions Online beta, i'd have thought they'd have the sense to learn from that mistake. Their small regular playtests didn't enable to have that game polished for release and i've lost so much faith in their abilities now that i doubt very much using the same method will do STO any favours.

The space combat has the potential to be really good but lacks depth at the moment. In most other mmo's during combat you're looking at least one full bar of powers/spells/skills, in STO it's basically just your weapons and upto 3 bridge officer skills (tactical, engineering and science officers). Which I wouldn't mind if other things were spot on like sound effects and ship control. Obviously it's still beta and the more cosmetic things may get polished but the basics of front and aft weapons and the bridge officer skills will remain the same.

Group/public missions are pretty epic the first few times, seeing phasers and torpedoes flying everywhere with various ship classes flying around looks really good. However at the moment and from what I've seen so far combat remains shallow with few if any real tactics apart from get in range, keep broadside to use forward and aft weapons at the same time and circle enemy until they're dead.

Saying all that sounds negative but I've only been in 4 of the 2 hour sessions so far, so I've had a maximum of 8 hours in game - obviously far too little time to judge a mmo accurately. And 2 of those sessions were at 2-4am uk time so being like one of the living dead during those sessions may also cloud my view :)

Hmm fair comments mart981 and thank you for your insight into the game thusfar. I would very much appreciate further comments as you continue to beta test the game if you wouldnt mind updating this thread once every few days?

(Really hoping you will change your mind about the game :D)

Sounds like a bit of a flop. Personally I would have been happy just with ship combat much like the old starfleet command games. But as stated above it doesnt look very good and I dont think its going to be that tactical.

Big fat MEH!

Hopefully if it survives the first six months then they will improve things but these days they dumb things down rather than increase the technical side of things.

Shame as I was looking forward to this.

I applied for Beta testing but didnt get any email about it :( Did they take long to respond to applicants?

bloodline I take it your beta testing too?

Tbh not a big star trek fan, and after playing Champions Online I've not got big hopes for this. If I want some Space action I'm going to be getting these (also following them closely!)

they both sound stunning on paper, and Black Prophecy looks phenomenal but I've been fooled too many times.

I'm actually finding these smaller known companies are making the better MMO's rather than companies like EA, Funcom etc.

It's basically Champions Online, with a star-trek theme put on the top.
The engine is exactly the same, the ingame options are identical, even the location of skills, map and the way you do missions are the same(the mission journal for example). Chat bar is the same, just trying to show you how much it's the same.

Except, it's star-trek so it interests me, still undecided if I'll be getting it.

Pretty sure phasers are 100% identical to the hand beams effects for power armour.

That....that right there, is a terrible...terrible way to do a beta. If thats the stage they are at right now and plan to release in effectively 2 months time, I'm sad to say I can only see one outcome for STO
