Is anyone playing this still?

I've just found out the demo was available so I downloaded it through Steam.

I can't say I was overly impressed and the 'demo' that leads you to think that you will have a vast expanse to explore before it ends came to rather a sudden stop.

I thought I'd have a look at subbing despite having Eve and LOTRO on the go. £9 a month is standard so wasn't fussed but then I spotted that they charge you 'points' for extra stuff which isn't something I think is really fair and made me back up from the subs page.

What are people's views of it here?

I think the general opinion that it was a flop, I didn't end up buying it from playing beta I could tell it wouldn't really last for me.

Flop I don't think so the die hard trekkies will be in there masses on it most would have signed up at the start for the lifetime one of fee so if the game was awful the developer would have got there funds back anyway.

Imo it suffered from being an MMO where players struggled to actually find the MMO. Everything was so instanced, so restricted that it ended up really just feeling like a graphical lobby (space station) and then little instances (ground or space) tacked on. I found on several occasions people saying "where's the MMO?"

Oddly enough, from what I have read and seen so far, its the same problem I can see SW:TOR having and I wouldn't be surprised if I see that question being asked again.

I'm sorry what?

I'm not so sure, it's a completely different oreintation of sci-fi mmo, but we don't have enough information, at least it's something new instead of Champions online reskinned and re-modeled for star trek.
They are also made by different people, I still see SW:TOR being capable of holding (not attaining, but keeping) high subscription numbers but some things have made me worry it won't be as "mmo" as we hope.

Time will tell.

Yeah, we'll see. Hope it turns out ok because there are SOOOOO many people pinning their hopes on SW:TOR and such high expectations of it. As I say, from what I've seen and read of it so far , all I see is the same graphical lobby+tacked on instances that are present in other linear "MMOs" , which causes me to think again that people will simply end up with the feeling that its not so much an MMO and more of an online co-op game. We'll see though, long way to go yet.

Anyone know how to start the Starbase 24 mission. I've got there, but I can't seem to interact with it.

I am using the demo game through steam but have added a serial code to my STO account and am currently downloading the full client. Will this make a difference?

I have fond memories of STO (including all the down times and chat here), but wouldn't go back. Stopped playing after my "free" 60 days. Apart from WoW, the MMO is dying.

Its not a mmo really its a single player game where they sub u for content. Sure u see ships when traveling in sector map but they could be npcs for all i care as they dont do owt but travel really on there. Their are ques for pvp which is daft i reckon it should be see a person u can attack the person but i would have to ask cryptic for a system like eve like low sec and high sec so ur pretty well safe in high sec but could get into a fight in low sec etc.

I hate the instance system but they cant change that now.

I mean if u can borrow a mates account and just play it now and then its not bad but i wouldnt sub it its not a mmo enough for a sub and the content is too slow and too little for the sub alone to be worth the content.

I didn't get a chance to play properly in the beta till right before release, because when it first started it was stupid times, unstable as hell and then I was busy till a couple days before. Didn't get a chance to cancel pre-order, so kept the game and still haven't felt the urge to actuall use the freegame time, I will do at same.

As someone said, Champions online reskinned, and Champions online was utter crap.

It felt cheap, cartoony, boring, slow, stories were poor, travel was painfully dull, every mission was generic, they probably got a decent wedge from lifetime subbers, but no where near enough. MMO's have ongoing costs, heavy costs, and without constant subscriber income it will start to suck more and more as they get rid of more of the staff who make new content as they can't afford them.

I'd imagine with the beta being so horrible, and the game so dull, that many people who planned/hoped to be lifetime subscribers decided not to, and loads of people canceled pre-order.

The problem with the hard core trekkies is, the game doesn't feel very accurate, or good, and as a bit of a trekkie myself, I hate the thing.

It was still half fun to play for a week, its always cool to blow a few things up while controlling a starship, even that last crap Startrek game on pc/360/ps3, which was awful, was nice to play for a few hours.

Ground based combat = the suck, space based combat = turn in circles, pressing basically 2 buttons, repeat.

Its so stupid, because startrek has the fanbase, that if someone behind startrek with all the cash put millions into a proper startrek mmo, they'd make a shedload of cash for a decade. Daft to skimp on it, take the cheap tacky route, and kill it.

I played the beta... and well wasnt overly impressed by it the space combat was pretty fun... :D i was tempted to reinstall it recently but i resisted the urge... dont really wanna get sucked into another mmo... since playing aoc and eve at the moment.....
