Star Wars blu ray sept 2011

Watched Empire blu ray last night. Holy crap that is such a great movie, so many great scenes. I have to admit, I also put on Ep IV just to watch the bit where Luke goes out and stares at the twin suns of Tatooine, with the surround sound turned up really loud. That scene always sends a shiver down my spine but with the fantastic blu ray surround mix it is twice as good, had a proper tear in my eye! :o

I cancelled my order, because the original theatrical editions were not included.

You'll crack eventually!

Can't see Lucas releasing the original theatrical versions of the films, which is a shame.

I'm sure they will appear once he is dead and who ever inherits his estate realises they could make a few more millions, I bet there won't be anything like as many people moaning about the milking of the cash cow then.

Hi all I'm not clued up on all the different version of these films. I have the DVD release of the 3 'new films' and had a box set of the VHS of the 'old' 3 so I have seen all of them in one form or another.

So what have I missed in the following?, I remember my 5th birthday I rented the the original film on VHS, what has changed from that film to the one that I will see on the new Blu-ray? Would the VHS I seen be the original release?

Why have these changes been made and have I missed out on anything?

Maybe these are silly questions but I'm intrigued.

The VHS films would be the original releases. I don't think Lucas altered them until the late 90's.

Lucas has made a mess of them IMHO, with his constant tinkering. I know a lot of people are willing to put up with the changes, but I'm not one of them. So I'll not be buying the Blu-ray's.

Lucas is a talentless individual IMO. I'm thankful he hasn't convinced Spielberg to mess about with the Indy films over the years.

Shame Lucas had some input in Indy 4, but then maybe Spielberg would have screwed that up all by himself. Who knows.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.
I never want to see the original theatrical releases again.
For all I care he could release them - but he wouldn't be getting any of my cash for them.

Seems there are people who seem to have these "memories" of the original release that somehow makes them better.
The newer versions look and sound a lot better - original is not always the best.

The first release of Bladerunner with it's terrible opening voice-over, lovey dovey ending and exclusion of dream sequence is not a film I'll revisit.
However the "final cut" is in my opinion the film that appears at the very top of my "all time favourite films".

Many of the technical changes are actualy pretty good, like cleaning up mattlines and other things.
But its where he's gone back and changed the context of entire scenes that most people have a problem with.
The biggest example of which has to be the whole Gredo - Han Solo debacle in A New Hope
However replacing pupet Yoda in TPM with CGI was a brilliant move, shame not even the Jedi Master himself could save that movie from Jar Jar.

Fair enough. You're entitled to your opinion.

My opinion is they are not better over all.

I can appreciate that the sound and picture quality is better, due to changes made. Clearing up some of the old effects, etc. That I have no issue with. What is not great, is that those changes also come with other changes, which is not what I want.

But there we go, it's a matter of opinion. You will have people that might grumble a bit when Lucas makes some changes, but will still love and buy the films whatever those changes might be, and you have people that think he is a talentless hack, who cannot leave them be, and would rather stick with the originals, even if they have all the so called faults.

Blade Runner: Final Cut, is certainly better than the theatrical version. It's also one of my all time favourite films.

I really don't see the fuss about the changes. Star Wars looks better then it has ever done and certainly sounds better then it ever has done before.

I just wish they could go back and make the first two films better :p

I just finished watching Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and found the effects, especially Jar Jar and co, very "meh" and "bland".

Totally agree.

I'm gutted that the audio is only 6.1.

Granted, it's 6.1 DTS- Master audio, but still.. I expect 7.1 from a Bluray, and certainly one from the skywalker ranch. Kung Fu panda has 7.1 FFS :(

On a side note.. I went to Tesco on my lunch today and they had about 200 box sets by the front of the store + the usual 20-25 on the shelf in the DVD aisle.

7.1 over 6.1 is no advantage really as it's still a fake 6.1...

.

Yeah I cracked.. Watched Ep III last night, and wow, it was excellent. Started on that one, knowing that the PQ & AQ, would be the best. Not a fan of the prequels, but Revenge of the Sith, is very very well done. Not too keen on the start, but as soon as Anakin loses the plot and goes on a bender, it had me glued. Wish that's how Episode 1 started.

Deciding on which of the other 5 to watch tonight.
