"On September 12, 2006, Lucasfilm and Fox Home Entertainment will release the original Star Wars Trilogy on DVD for the very first time. These editions, which will be packaged with the Special Edition versions released in 2004, will be restored to their original incarnations."

Believe i read that Lucas had lost the original films and all that remained where some laser discs.

Whats the point in releasing a digitally enhanced version of the original if they are still going to keep a large amount of the new crap they added in. Why are they bothering tweaking stuff? Should be just a cleaned up version of the original.

I thought that's what they are doing? Just a tidied up version of the original? That's annoying if they're adding loads of effects *still* to the original 1977 film, unless I've read it a little wrong, but meh. Still buying them anyway :p

I think the most recent editions were the best. Don't know why there needs to be so many version releases now.

does this mean i gotta buy yet ANOTHER star wars trilogy?? :(

i mean, i love star wars an all, but come on, we have enough versions of the first trilogy, why not get the first 3 films in a trilogy?? thats what im waitin for!

Isn't that what the OP is going on about?
All I know is that later this year for anybody that really wants them the original trilogy with the original content are being released.
Personally I cannot see the attraction and it certainly is something Star Wars related that I'll not be buying - I'll stick to the versions that the director obviously prefers as he classes them as his "de facto" revisions.
Each to their own obviously.

Sounds like this release will include original versions and the special editions.

Can't wait, I've been delaying buying the original trilogy on dvd.

The SE versions had some silly changes. To name two:

In ESB: Vader saying "Tell my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival" instead of "Bring my shuttle"...the latter was far better.

In ANH: Greedo shooting first at Han.

I hated that. I hate the way it cuts up the whole sequence with the Millennium Falcon flying through the clouds with the music. It just cuts in mid tune, plays some random other music then cuts back. Gah such a waste. I knew a very dedicated fan who insisted it worked simply because it showed how Vader got onboard his ship. Do we really need to see it? Can't we just get that he took a shuttle?

Personally, I wish they would just release the originals, in the unaltered state, with ropey picture and sound and call it the "Bleeting Nostalgia Nerds Edition" :)

I'm a huge fan of SW (I grew up with the films) but I can't be doing with this. Lucas wants the SE's to be the "official" version and I kinda feel sorry for him in a way (not too sorry, of course...) because now, after finally caving in and releasing the films he considers "unfinished", he gets accused of being a money grabber just trying to cash in. He's basically damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

personally I prefer the re-released film versions ('97ish I think)
probably because they're the version that I saw growing up

I hate the Dvd released version, damn Lucas for adding Hayden into RotJ

Ok, so given the clarity in these various revisions, which is the best revision to get for all films?

Why not get the soon to be released boxset (Sept) and you get both the original and special addiction versions :)

If Lucas had a clue, he would have never have introduced JJBinks etc, and cuts like "The Phantom Edit" would have never been required.

Star Wars is for 30+ somethings, a new teenage audience was not required to sell DVD's

He's only releasing the orginals because some fans reckon the tweaked versions suck

The same vertical (or was it horizontal) cut over and over is a bit stupid too...there is more than 1 way to transition between scenes George.
