Hi guys,

I've spent a long time away from components for 'fun'. Well Star Citizen has finally come back on my radar, decided now I'd like to get into it afterall.

Problem is my 1155, i3 (HT:1) and GTX680 linux dev/win box, just isn't enough. The processor is 100%, masking the GPU performance. Although from lots of reading the 680 should just pass, enough for me to taste the alpha/beta at least.

Peace of mind question then, two minimal solutions as I see it:

If GTX680 can holdout, then I'm thinking i5 1155, come back in 12 months for serious bean upgrade

If not, then I'm thinking get into 1150 with new mobo/gpu whole tukey roast, recycling wha t I can ( Akasa psu 500w, HD's etc)

Logically an 1150 i5 with R92#0/9#0 is the way to go. Justification harder. An i5 1150 is roughly the same cost as the sunsetting 1155's. Plus a £100 1150 z97 mobo. I know there is always the upgrade of tomorrow around the corner. :)

Aside/ the mobo I have won't do sli. So no matter which way I view this the i3 is destined for aircooled media box one day... thats swmbo justification argument. It's all overkill for a terminal and text editor daily grind.

I'd welcome your wiser and more up to date thinking on this challenge.

Cheers

My sugguestion would be to try to find a 2nd hand i7 2600K for cheap.

As for graphic card, it's best wait till the game is out first and see how your GTX680 does first.

Super, thank you. I'm keeping an eye out though, must be one gathering dust somewhere... Mainly as OC have no 1155 chips in atm.

I expect 12+months the gtx680 will be obsolete in this context. But equally it can still perform well enough. This is the first thing I've gotten bitten by on pc since AnarchyOnline & Eve launched... I do seem to pick hardware taxing things to dabble in.

gives you a reason to upgrade!

I have just brought a EVGA GTX 970 to go with my I7 950 3ghz as I mainly use my PC for gaming.

as others have said wait till the final specs and the game is released as you don't want to upgrade a PC on the current specs in case they change and you find yourself not having the new specs to play the game

:D If I'd had the foresight to buy a mobo for sli, I'd be in the same camp. Good to see generations of hardware still leaping as far as they do. My 680 is the EVGA one too... not actually used it much, not many steam games caught my attention.

Looking forwards, 12 months say. I want to be truly pained by whatever is here now under my desk, not caught halfway. In other words, when it's released be ready to really enjoy it. But today I know I can't move in hanger, so need to get out of that small rut first.

Bad news for back pocket mind you :S

Upgrading for a game that's a year+ from being remotely finished.

naa trying to minimally upgrade to play the beta now. But crucially not wasting too much cash ahead of it's release.

Half a mind on being able to play for sure at release without the rebuild.

But really not wanting to upgrade at all. Otherwise it's easy to fill the ocuk basket ;)
