Starfarer is an in-development open-world single-player space-combat, roleplaying, exploration and economic game. The player is a space captain who can seek out fortune and glory however they choose

Starfarer is currently available, although currently only as missions that you do, however next week there is a large patch bringing in the open world elements that should make this game fantastic. Its very reminiscent of spaz but has more emphasis on tactical space combat and what sounds like a better open world game, currently it sounds like it might be a mount and blade in space sort of thing.

Its doing a similar business model to many other indie games currently where you buy in alpha cheaply and get all updates up to release and further etc. I picked it up a while ago and think its fantastic, well worth a look.

Looks very similar to SPAZ

They are quite similar, but the combat in spaz always felt very simple and not very tactical while in this it is a lot more focus on tactics. Not sure how the campaign mode in starfarer will play out yet, the first build of that is coming next week so should be able to see how they compare.

I've been watching this for a while and I believe it's one of the reasons I never really got on with SPAZ. Definitely one of my most anticipated games.

Looks great!, will add it to the list

Starfarer is a promising real-time tactics RPG that’s currently in development. The latest pre-order build, 0.5a, was released today, bringing the game one step closer to the open-world space opera that its developers have planned. Previous iterations of Starfarer have let you choose from a number of scripted missions, but in 0.5a you can finally tackle a basic campaign map that lets you expand your fleet (through purchase or capture) and level up your crew. No matter how large your fleet is, though, you’ll always control a single character and ship, directing your allies through a detailed tactical map.

The game already offers quite a bit in the way of customization to your fleet, from types of ships (large capital ships to tiny fighters) to weapons and armor, down to even the personality and experience of the crew. The final release, though, sounds like it will be a dream for fans of space combat and trading games like Escape Velocity Nova – whether you want to be an ace pilot, the admiral of a large fleet, or something in-between, there will be plenty of ways to make your (permanent, meaningful) mark on the galaxy. On top of that, Starfarer’s devs seem committed to making the game friendly for modders, with fans already creating their own ships and missions.

The final price of the game is set at $20, but you can pre-order it right now for $10 and receive the current build as well as all future updates.

Ah right, saw the wtf playthrough a while ago, couldnt remember the name, will be getting this.

*edit - looks like you can buy the alpha build now at 10 US, and get updates including final release. That sounds like a plan.

I bought this in May last year because it sounds like the finished product will be amazing. A real-time Space Rangers maybe? Hell yeah!

I haven't played in months because, as good as the combat is, that's all the developer seemed to be working on for ages. Now that the campaign stuff is coming in I might have to take another look, but I'm tempted to wait for full release too.

But anyway - my prediction is that Starfarer will be a smash hit. :)

I bought this last night and wasted an hour or two on it. Its pretty good, much like SPAZ but as everyone else says you need a bit of tactics to win in the battles.

Anyone know how to adjust the amount of items you buy at the stations? (Havnt checked the forums yet) Was trying to get more crew but I couldnt seem to adjust the amount i wanted to buy.

Hold shift.

I really like this game, it's in early stages but for the money it's pretty enjoyable!

Bottom line

Starfarer shows a lot of potential and already provides great gameplay and many fun elements for an alpha build! The game’s tactical aspect is very mature already but the campaign mode feels like much work in progress still (although it looks promising).

The game offers a diversified array of experiences to players. It features a very enjoyable and complex tactical component, a promising RPG campaign system and some adventure and strategy elements also.
Fractal Softworks has its game through an alpha funding scheme. You can pre-order Starfarer for Windows PC, Mac or Linux in the game’s official website for $10 (FS have announced that the final price will be $19.95). If you wish to play the latest build for your OS just head over to this page.
