Start up POST takes forever ...

Just changed graphics cards from a broken Geforce 8800GTX to an Radeon 5770. Turn PC on, everything kicks in, however no screen, no beep, just my DVD drive making a weird scanning noise very 10 seconds.

Then after about 40-50 seconds, motherboard beeps and computer boots normally, no errors, no problems. Runs fine once it's started, it's just the start up POST takes like 40-50 seconds ... then all of a sudden <beep> and the computer boots fine.

Googling the result only finds problems where the PC won't turn on at all, my PC turns on and runs fine ... just takes a while for some reason.

Any help would be much appreciated thanks.

(Mobo = ASUS® P5N32-E SLI+
OS = win7 64bit)

Happens to the best of us. My computer, completely different hardware, does this too. Currently putting it down to the ghost in the machine and worrying about other things.

You could try flashing to the latest BIOS for your board to see if that helps, my old UD5 used to have huge delays in the POST process, but after I updated to the latest one at the time it would startup a whole lot quicker than it did previously.

Could be checking for drive(s).

you could check to see if removing power lead from dvd alters this, or temporarily change boot sequence to hdd first.

Yeah I'm going to try unplugging the DVD drive. However the PC is booting fine, it's the initial power on sequence that takes forever. Then the Mobo beeps and alls fine.

I used to get this with USB drives initialising, might be worth checking. Sometimes hardware changes can cause things to manifest that might not appear directly related to the new hardware!

I bilieve they had released a BIOS update to fix this. Have you flashed to the latest?

No I think I'll try this now.

Edit:

hahaha look what I found.

Version 1502
P5N32-E SLI PLUS BIOS 1502
Fix it takes long time to screen show with certain AMD graphic card when booting up the system.

:D

Edit:

Ok so I updated ... restarted and then the PC didn't do anything, fans turned on ... nothing else ... ergh. Pulled the case cover off and saw the mobo battery and pulled it out ... put it back in PC boots perfectly fine.

... so it's fixed. Dunno if the update helped or pulling the battery ... don't care. Got my baby back.
