Pretty crazy really, i used to be a non stop gamer, 12 hours a day spec.. competed in clan matches, completed games within the first days of release.. then i got into partying, women, cars, etc ... and at this time half life 2 was released.. i got a copy but never really played it.. then last night at long last i decided to give it a blast and the way its withstood the test of time is amazing!.. just cant wait to finish work today to get back into it!

Definitely a great game. If you want to update the graphics a bit, and add some more "realism" to it, try checking out the FakeFactory mod. Glad you're getting in to it, great game.

I got these in the Steam sale... I'm going to get the Cinematic Mod for my first play through.

In steam, I think it shows:

Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2 Episode 1
Half-Life 2 Episode 2

(at work now so can't check)

Which one do I play/launch first? Why are there 3 separate games?

Half Life 2 was the first one released, Episode 1 and 2 are add-ons ;)

The order you listed them is the order you should play them.

The Episodes continue on after the end of HL2.

You really don't need to do that. I'm not saying you categorically shouldn't, but you really don't need to if you're looking at the graphics in screen shots (especially the outdated shots on the Steam store page) and you think they're too dated to endure. Valves art is magnificent, it outshines the technology.

If you do use it though, just don't chose the optional train wreck of a character pack.

This tbh. I'd play it vanilla the first time through. Does cinematic mod still modify sound and difficulty as well?

This reply saddens me .. Women over Half Life games any day. ;)

Well you would say that Ted, after all you were the judge at the Lovely Girls Competition on Craggy island.:) (great quote that day btw).

I wish I hadn't played HL2 so I could play it fresh instead of some of the other stuff I've been playing lately. I loved the sheer immersion in Half Life 2 (and the first one). Finished MOH Single Player and trying to get through CODBLOPS single player now, and I know they want it to be 'cinematic' or whatever, but I just feel like I can't do anything spontaneous that I might want to try out. I'm continually railroaded into their next ACTION! scene but I feel like I have no control over most of it.

I loved the way in HL2, like with the mavity gun, you could just do loads of messing around with stuff, all in your own time, experimenting. I felt like I was actually in control of what happened - that's what Gaming is about for me. If I wanted to watch a movie instead, I'd watch a movie.

Easily one of the best games I've played. As you say, even now years later, still an incredibly good game in all aspects.

Best game ever. It's the only game that I finish about once a year and could probably just play it again as soon as I'd finished it. I last did a full half-life playthrough in the summer.
