Starter Motor(?!)

Do computers have starter motors?! 'Cos if they do, mines buggered! :o

I've got a problem switching on my computer. When I press the on button it goes to boot but then dies after 1-2secs. It keeps doing this unless I press it repeatedly and then it will finally "catch" and boot up.

Something is obviously knackered but what is it? PSU?

I've recently had an overheating problem which I've kind of ignored if that matters...

Spec is - XP2000+, 756meg, FX5700, 80 + 40gig.

it could be the switch on the computer case, remove the 2 pin jumper from the motherboard that connects to the front of the case and get a screw driver and carefully make a connection between the two pins that were underneath the jumper.
 
Sounds like the system needs a clean out Dust down and blow out to me.
Ignoring overheating is about the worst thing you can do to a PC.
If it has cooked up then god knows what's wrong.
Strip it down and clean everything Gently with compressed air and a Clean paint brush/dusting brush.
Disconnect and reconnect everything cleaning the contacts as you do it.

After doing this if it still does it then post back.

Couldn't get back on last night due to IE & Firefox repeatedly crashing :rolleyes: (Other thread here)

My system is so screwed :o

dodgy capacitors on the motherboard at a guess.

My old K7 Athlon had the same problem, it turned out the capacitors on the KA7 motherboard were dying (and indeed died about 2 months later).
