Hi,

I have a modest TV, 43" W75 Sony Android TV from 2015 (I think). Might be able to swing a 49" or 55" XE8/9 shortly.

Unfortunately the sound is lacking, and was hooked up to a Dell 2 + sub I had lying around, not so good.

Any recommendations for an upgrade to this?

Surround system, 2.1 or 5.1? Amp and 2 speakers? Soundbar?

Thanks all!

Budget?

Start with Amp and 2 speakers, then can always add to it, unless you feel you never will and just want a sound bar.

Knew I would forget something, £3-500 would be nice, lower the better.

I simply want something to sound good, with a bit more feel to it if you know what I mean.

For that budget I'd look into stereo. Say £200 AVR with £300 speakers, that will get you a decent system and you can upgrade as you go. Go for standmount speakers.

It's possible to get high end floorstanders second hand, for example Celestion A2's I have seen for £300, these were £1600 when new.

Thanks!

Thinking about this more, it will be for a living room, rather than independent room. So basically something the gf can live with.

How do we all feel about soundbars? Or is that an unspeakable word?

Thanks @lucid for the super informative post!

I had been looking at soundbars with ARC as my Sony 43W756C has ARC. Oddly enough, I hadn't really considered other brands, was sticking with Sony, will do now!

Now I'm looking at a an entry level Yamaha RXV383, perhaps pair that with a set of speakers. Would I also need a sub to accompany that, or will the speakers carry the full range?

Thanks for all the input with this!

I have decided to go with amplifier and 2 standmount speakers. I was actually gifted an Denon 2105 amp. It is on the old side, 2005 I think, but for a basic system which works with the TV, it should be fine? I'm not needing 4k, ultra audio, Atmos, etc.

Should be getting speakers tomorrow! Liking some Q acoustics 3020, DALI Spektor 2, or similar.

All sound ok?
