I'm upgrading my pc from the spec below:
Pentium 4 2.26GHz
Memory : 1.5GB DDR
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS

I've just brought this week a nzxt case & a antec 650w PSU and are looking to buy more in the coming months. Ideally i'd like a i5 760 but i've been thinking of jumping ship to AMD.

From what I can see is that if i get a motherboard for a AM3 socket ir means as i get more money i would be able to upgrade the cpu. but with the intel it seems they are changing these quite often. is this correct?

I've got a i7 and i5, both ok, both highly overrated. I'd get a good dual i3 with a better graphics card and ram. What do you want the PC for, also what games do you play mainly ?

Mainly it will be used for photoshop with gaming fitted in when i've got time. Haven't had time to game recently but i'm felling the need to spend more time on it.

I brought my pc 9 years ago as a prebuild and over that time i;ve upgraded bits and pieces. the main thing i want to be able to do is make sure i can easily upgrade in the future hence the looking into moving to the AM3 boards
