Just looking for people's thoughts on this, if you needed to start from scratch with say a £1500-£2000 budget what current system would you buy into?

I'm in a bit of a pickle at the moment, I sold my gripped 550d and lenses a while back and downsized to an A6000 because the Dslr was not being used due to size and weight, I like the size of the Sony but it continously frustrates me when I'm photographing my daughters indoors and low light and I end up missing shots, the amount of keepers in this environment are tiny compared to when I was using the Canon so end up using my phone rather than getting the Sony out.

I've decided to sell the Sony and start fresh so I went into my local camera shop and had a chat and got hands on a few systems and pretty much settled on getting a Olympus M1 with just a 12-40 Pro lens, with the mark 2 announcement a few days after this I held off. Now this announcement has happened the mark 2 and 12-40 would cost me £2.3k which is a lot more than my budget.

The girls will be in school after Christmas and the wife will be going back to work so I'll be able to get back out with the camera and use it a bit more than for just the girls.

Weighing up my options and reading reviews I think even with the M1 mark 2 I may be no better off in low light situations than I currently am, I think this goes for Mft in general?

If I went with the mark 2 I'd probably see whether it comes down in price after Christmas or import a body and buy the lens second hand.

The new Canon M5 is an option but the lens range is tiny and I don't want to use a adapter.

I've even been looking at getting another Dslr but skipping the grip this time and keeping lenses to a minimum.

The two that take my fancy are the Canon 80d or the Nikon D500 even though they aren't equivalent I prefer the 80d over the 7d 2, I've been looking at the Sigma 18-35 F1.8 as a general lens, I tend to use primes more so this zoom would cover my primes and give me F1.8.

Excuse the essay I just can't make a decision at the moment.

I'm an extremely biased Nikon guy (with a D750 for low light), but what about an XT2? Budget may creep over what you were after though :/

I've not included the XT2 as I was unable to get hands on one in the shop, I know the OM-d M5 ii is slightly smaller than the Fuji but using it as a comparison I preferred the larger grip on the M1.

As I said I was sold by the format but the cost of the M1 ii has made me think about what else is out there.

Grrrr still can't decide, For some reason the 80d and Sigma 18-35 F1.8 keep creeping into my basket and then the whole size debate comes up again

D500 + 35mm (~50mm equivalent) 1.8 and also grab a 18-200 (28-300mm equivalent) as your multipurpose lens.

D500 is universally praised as Nikons best DX dslr and gets glowing low light and AF reviews, put that together with its high FPS and its a winner.

35mm 1.8 has great saturation, dof and is very sharp and great even wide open, it'll be perfect to take photos of your kids inside. On top of that its very cheap!

18-200mm should be your second lens, it'll be your all purpose super-zoom for when you aren't doing portraits with the 35mm. Again a relatively cheap lens for its quality.

See what amazon and the major online camera shops have in the way of offers over black friday/cyber monday, if you aren't in a rush and the BF/CM sales offer no discount wait till the Jan sales.

If I was starting fresh it would probably be Fuji there cameras seem to deliver eactly what I want which is decent quality straight out of the camera. Olympus would also be very tempting I've always been a fan of the jpeg output and the later generation 4/3 sensors are excellent.

Thanks for the suggestions, I think I'm going to pop down to my local camera shop and get hands on again.

I'm all pro Fuji but, if you are looking for a camera to perform especially well in low and have the budget, I would seriously consider the Sony A7s..

You can pick up the A7s with 50mm 1.8 for £1858 from Wex
