Well I guess this could be the correct forum- Here goes.
Building a machine from my odds n sods box
Intend installing Win2K
The HDD is a 20 gig formerly Win'98 but now cleared.
Format the drive install the W2K disk
and get the message - Cannot install into a DOS mode disk.

Now all I know about is ye old FDsk and all that ,which is of course DOS.
How do I get this old DOS disk back to 'virgin; or NTFS state?

Run Fdisk and Delete the Partition, make sure there is no dos partitions left, then create a new partition and format the drive as normal.

just boot from the windows 2000 cd and let setup do it's thing. you can delete/create/format partitions on the fly. no need to be messing about with fdisk. :)
